This morning (I'm off work on a Monday!) I decided to clean up my computer desktop. I opened a folder that is work related (document templates, online license renewals, etc.). Found a document titled: retirement.xlsx which I created in Feb 2010. I so wanted to quit back then that I actually counted the days of work left with a target retirement date of 4/1/15. I had totally forgotten about that, and the target retirement date too. I'm now planning to retire 3/1/2015. When I created it I had an estimated 1930 days of work left! Ugh! Now I'm down to less than 200 days--going part time later this year.

I do almost the same thing. On Fridays, I cross off each week on a custom calendar I printed out. Nice to see progress as I get closer toward February 2015. However, I'm now considering staying until March only because that's the next ESPP payout, which I think I would lose if I didn't stay to the purchase date. But, it would only amount to a few thousand after-tax dollars, so if I'm absolutely sick of the place and the people, I'll just go ahead and quit in February when I fully vest. Leaving a few thousand on the table doesn't bother me that much.

DH and I finally agreed on a date. Firecalc says we're good to go now - but not enough left over for some of our fun activities we want. My new date lets me achieve a few goals. 20 years with my employer (albeit due to mergers/acquisitions/spin offs/splits/etc I'm on my 5th or 6th payroll name.) That happens next January. And April will get me the 2014 bonus.

Plan is to skip a summer vacation this year and blow the wad next year - spend the entire summer in Europe slow travelling. (We still have school age kids - so we're limited to summer.)

DH retired this year (2014) at age 62. He's thoroughly adjusted to his new lifestyle. I'm in OMY just to fund some extra padding into our travel/play budget.

Time for the next third of life!

OK people, time to start thinking about what you are going to do the first month or two of retirement. We are getting close to escaping the drudgery. Maybe this is how an inmate feels when their sentence is coming to an end. Some of us have less than 250 days to go. Personally I have 325 days to go. I might work one extra month; not for the money, but for the opportunity to buy some season tickets. It's one of the small perks of my job.

So what is the first trip or adventure you are going to make when you RE? DW asked me that and I said, "camping for a week on my favorite island." She said, "But you know I don't like camping." I said, "That's OK, you aren't going with me." She knows a week with no phone, no internet, no people (very few people on this 17 mile long coastal island), is my kind of thing. That is one of the things I will do to decompress. How about you?

I have been wanting to go back and visit Europe ever since my last trip to London way back in 1998, when I went for two weeks on a combo business/vacation trip. In fact, that was the last "real" vacation I had. Everything since then has just been long weekends, or days off here and there.

I never had the time or money to do a "real" trip back to Europe because I always had a job, boss, and work hanging over me. And to me, a trip overseas isn't worth it unless it's at least two weeks, but taking two weeks off just means I have that much more work that piles up, so even though I'm on vacation, I would dread coming back to the mess that built up in the meantime.

So...after I quit, one of the first things I'm going to do is really treat myself. I want to buy a first-class ticket over to London, first-class BritRail and EuroRail passes, and just go wherever, and do whatever, strikes my fancy once I'm over there. No itinerary, no schedule. And I want to stay for at least three or four weeks.

I want to go back to Scotland, see more of the countryside, and visit Edinburgh again. Stay at the Balmoral hotel maybe (I stayed there in 1998 during a trip to Edinburgh).

I want to go back to London, do all the touristy stuff I missed before. See some West End plays (I saw Lion King there before, I loved that).

Maybe travel the continent. Maybe go to Italy or Ireland. Basically, whatever I want to do for about a month. And no coming back home to a job, or a boss, or projects.

I basically want to be Rick Steves for a month in Europe, and damn the cost. I've put it off long enough, and I owe it to myself to go.

Well I have 14 to 20 months before I retire. Several things in that timeframe need to happen before I declare my self Retirement Ready. The first thing I will do is sleep in the first day rather than get up at 5:00 AM. Shortly after that, DW and I would like to take our Motor Home out for a few weeks to unwind and plan the next chapter in our lives. In our mid fifties we have been blessed with good health, adequate financial means and a youthful spirit . Maintaining each of these blessings will be our first priority. Travel is heavy on our list and hope to spend a little time in Europe. We will also travel to parts of the U.S. by RV or in some cases automobile with our pet.

We have 3 ERs at 43 years of age, 8 under 50. That's quite early. Oh to be young and retired!

I might (but only "might") change mine to Mar 2015, only to maybe take advantage of an ESPP purchase in March. If I leave before then, they don't do a partial purchase, you lose out on the stock purchase, and just get your ESPP contributions refunded.

But if the stock price remains at the levels it's at right now, the after-tax profit would only amount to a few thousand dollars, definitely below $10k, which to me, isn't enough for me to stay another months.

If it's over $10k, I'll stay another month. If not, I'm leaving in February.

Yes...I want to get away THAT badly, that I'm willing to leave $10k on the table to leave a month early.

We' still have school age kids so are confined to school breaks for travel (for now.) We want to spend an ENTIRE summer in Europe. It's in the early planning stages. We'll string together 1 week vacation apartment rentals. 10-11 weeks in all.

We may do a lease on a car for part of it. But we all enjoy trains and ferries as well so that is still on the table. (We'd rent cars in 2 day bursts to see things outside our city bases as needed.)

Budget is $25k for a family of 4 for 10 weeks. This money was lump sum set aside for a while. (We've got some padding set aside also - but I think we can do it for that amount.)

I love researching vacations before we go - so the fun has already started for me.

I'm the same way - I *might* go another month is ESPP is looking generious.
