Class of 2015

Longtime lurker here but only saw this thread today and decided to register and join the party. You can count me in the Class of 2015. March 31st, age 63.

I'm looking forward to participating!

I already have my resignation letter crafted and ready to turn in in early February, but I'm unsure if I'll actually walk out the door that month or not. We have an ESPP payout in early March, and I might decide to wait it out for that.

A lot depends on the next five weeks. There are some really nasty projects being dumped on our team, and I might be so sick of it by then that I tell them to shove it, and still leave in February two weeks after turning in notice.

Time will tell I suppose. Either way, I'll be quitting them this year. I'm sick of the place, and IT, so time for me to exit stage left.

The "I don't work here anymore" voice mail and auto-reply e-mail messages are set, the office is cleaned out, the computer is wiped, and I've gone home. I still have one more "official" act--buy my team a beer at 4:00. But other than that, I'm retired!

Update...

My manager just submitted a one-day PTO request for me in our HR system because today was technically a work day but I didn't go in today.

He knows I'll have to work one or two days over next weekend because of a major deployment happening that I have to participate in, so I was planning on taking a "comp day" or two to make up for it. We even talked about it.

So much for that plan I guess. He's kind of a passive/aggressive personality, and has done at least one other douchebag move to a teammate that I know of, so it doesn't surprise me.

I can't wait until I shove my resignation letter in his face five weeks from now. I'm supposedly the only person on the team marked as "key personnel" (I was the first person to form our team over 3 years ago) so I bet that, and his personality, means he's going to panic when I give notice. I anticipate he's going to throw money at me (promotion, salary increase, RSUs, etc), and get the Senior Director, VP, and maybe even the two co-founders and CEO to talk me into staying, but it won't do any good. My BS bucket is full, and I'm ready to tell them to go shove it.

Five more weeks until I call my manager into a meeting room for a "one on one" and shove that resignation letter across the desk. I can't wait.

EDIT: Congrats, FatCyclist! Enjoy your newfound freedom!!! :)

On the street on 15 Jan. Age 67. At liberty to pursue other interests.
With oil dropping, we might have been retiring this year whether we planned to or not. I'm still wondering if I could get laid off instead.

I filled up at $1.599/gallon today. My tank was half full but I couldn't help myself.

Cats out of the bag at work. They know I'm planning on retiring early July.

Welcome Blueblock. Congrats on the upcoming retirement.

Let us know if you end up resigning on Monday or not. Would be great to go out with a little severance money though.

B.S. bucket is full? Mine would definitelybe overflowing after all that.

I.T. is tough because even when you're on vacation you're not truly free. Seems like you're always tethered to email and can't stray too far from a computer in case there is an issue/outage.

For a one or two day weekend deployment, a comp day should be a no brainer.

Yep, I'm sick of IT. Been doing it for almost 30 years, and I'm done.

I told them before I left on our company shutdown that I would NOT be answering my phone, or returning voicemails/emails while I was out of town visiting family. Every other time I've taken PTO, I'd still monitor my phone, but not this time. If the sh*t hit the fan, all my systems crashed, and the place went into panic mode, somebody else would just have to deal with it.

I'm surprised nothing must have come up, because I only saw a couple emails directed my way, and no phone calls or texts.

If I'm blessed enough to leave the IT field after this company, I will NEVER go back to it. I'll live in a cardboard box and eat sewer rat for dinner before I'll go back into IT.

It's done! I submitted my letter today (via email, as manager is in San Antonio, corporate in San Diego & I'm in Austin).

In 90 days I will be w*rking 1 day a week at only 1 site, providing some additional supervision for $$ as I do now. That only entails some chart reviews and 2 meetings a month and a few emails.

4/6/2015 - relative freedom!

I don't think I will be w*rking at all in 2016 if plans work out. But, the best-laid plans...

I turned in my resignation today and agreed to work until the project I am on no longer needs me. I was told it could drag on into March but probably would end in February. I'm happy with that. It is also long enough that unless I'm tight (which I'm not) on meeting a deadline I'll be able to still use vacation time.

Unfortunately, the only "severance" is the Texas unemployment which isn't worth gaming (~$20K over 6 months). I also have a good reputation amongst certain project managers who have asked for me in the past so it's unlikely I would be laid off in an early round.

Congratulations.
I dealt with remote management. My solution was to resign when I happened to be manager of the day, my remote manager always appointed one of the staff(me) for that pleasure.

I knew of my manager's plans in advace, scheduled a "career discussion meeting" that day with his boss, our VP. He was in the same location as I was.

I didn't say anything negative, but it wouldn't feel right to give myself my resignation.:what:

Very cool. Did you tell them you were retiring or just "pursuing other interests"? Were they shocked? I bet that was quite the rush.

My resignation letter just said "resigning" but I told my boss that I was retiring. He was a little surprised since I am "so young." I'm 63 but he's 68 and shows no sign of retiring. Our department has numerous engineers over 70 that I believe intend to die here.

I really didn't get a rush out of the whole thing. There was nothing making me want to escape except the time at the office. It's just time to go and do other things. Money won't be an issue. I've decided that I have been working at least the last 3 years for the grandkids. If I run out of money going forward, it will mean a complete financial collapse so having 5 times my assets wouldn't make me any more secure.

I do have to apologize to everyone for causing the market drop yesterday. Nothing like a 2% (interday) one day drop to cause one to hesitate retiring.

2B - Congratulations! Regarding the market drop, no problem. We needed that drop and probably a few more to cause us to check our calculations before we pull the trigger like you did. I like the "so young" comment because it is the reaction of so many.

I could see the "so young" comment if I was 53. Somehow at 63, I don't feel like an early retiree.

Change mine to April 2015 instead of October. Decided it would be criminal to work during the summer. :D

Gave 2 month notice yesterday after 3 years of OMY issues--feels great now that it is done.

2 months should go quickly and fairly uneventfully as I unload on my replacement.

Can't wait!

And please change my date to December 2015. Not sure I will actually retire then either but am hoping to start w#*king part-time in 2016 or semi-retirement.

I won't be ER'ing this year after all. I think I hit FI but have taken advice to go part-time. The hours and money are great. I'm thinking another year or two at most. Probably the OMY syndrome.
