Friday was my last day. They had me training my replacement all the way to the end, and boy, was that unfun. Friday afternoon, strolled down to the office to turn in my laptop and clean out my locker. I said goodbye to a few co-workers who were around (actually most said they would talk to me soon, which I know is not going to happen!).

I had bought a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate, but when I opened it, it turned out to be red wine! I clearly need to read the labels more carefully. It was not quite as festive as I'd hoped, haha.

I'm still feeling nervous about the money part, anxiously waiting for the company to mail me my pension & stock ownership plan information. And wondering if I'll really be able to keep myself busy! So far it's just like a normal weekend, Monday is when it will sink in for real.

1st Step

Was planning to FIRE end of April. Was told last year my job was being relocated to another country and I'd need to move to keep it. Decided I'll play the game and see if the company will offer a package if I keep saying no...won't move, won't accept another position, etc. Told my boss on Friday I'm not moving, but more than willing to help with the transition for the person who will replace me. Told him I thought 3 months would be the right period of time. If they don't offer me anything at least I tried!

That's hilarious. Maybe you'll have to celebrate again next week, but do it right this time.

Today I discovered my simulation is off by a few hundred k. Oops. DW and I are leaning towards staying the course and tightening the budget a bit instead of OMY. It's looking like mid October now. I might try to work 2 days a week starting then. Is that still retirement?

Sorry to hear that. I was laid off in November... shortly there after I was I was offered another job.... that I turned down. I was asked if I'd work a few months so they could find someone to fill the spot. So, are these couple months retirement? Nope. But that is my opinion.

If you were working doing something for the joy of it... that would be different. While I like a lot about the work I do, I have other plans of what I need to do now in my life right now. So work is not retirement right now for me. Again, my opinion

Today I sent a message to my Interim Director giving 30 days notice to leave. Sending an e-mail on Sunday may be unusual but I want to give him time to calm down. He has a reputation for over reacting and I don't want it to end badly for him.

So my last day is 2 March and I will shift to occasional independent consulting. Others can decide if this is truly RE, but I will now control my schedule and I look forward to the freedom. This will include several weeks this summer in Kodiak visiting my youngest daughter.

This has been on my mind for months and the interesting message in Church this morning was "slow me down Lord, so I can appreciate what money can't buy." Very fitting.
 
Congratulations, Tekward! Hope your last month goes well. Kodiak sounds like a beautiful place, we'll be spending a day there in May as part of a cruise. Several weeks would be wonderful!
 
Thanks for the well wishes. I think I'm going to like this retirement business.

For my first Monday in retirement - a good friend, who retired the same day I did, and I are going to lunch down in Galveston. Why? Because we can. :)

Fair enough. In the end, retirement is just a word. 2 days a week would feel like victory, at least for a while.

Well the meeting with the new Director went better then expected. I worried about a angry defensive reaction but instead he shook my hand and said he envied me! He also opened the door for me as a contract instructor teaching ~10% of the time at 3X the hourly pay. Great option that I didn't expect to be available.

Lesson learned - giving the boss some time to process can work well.

Where there isn't an ugly history, I heartily agree. When I told my boss I was retiring, I made the transition period whatever he felt comfortable with. I'm staying with my current project until 27 February. My traditional Mexican lunch with the department is scheduled for 20 February. I doubt I'll try to recross the bridge but I definitely didn't burn it. I am paying back in kind as best I can for the excellent treatment I've received over the last 9 years.

Only 14 more "in-office" days until 2B becomes Ib. :dance:
 
I had my annual performance review today. It was by far the easiest of my career. No more BS from the boss, no need for him to use the corporate buzz words or try to explain that while I'm doing a good job, "the competition is fierce at my level so the raise will be unremarkable. "

There was a lot of "we sure are going to miss your knowledge and expertise", you're the go-to person for that system and it's going to be hard to get things done without you, etc. Hmph! Maybe they should have told me that five years ago when it mattered.

He reiterated the possibility of a severance package and I reiterated that I will gladly stay around until June to see if it becomes available.

Then the boss confided that he's a little jealous I'm able to go at age 50. He has to stick it out until he's eligible for retiree medical benefits. Not me-- thanks to DH and his good retiree benefits.

I found I have to postpone my retirement plans for at least 2-3 more years. So will open slot 36 for someone else.

Well, I don't know if I can officially be added to this list, because I'm planning on running my new business, but I put in notice for 3/2/2105 to be my last day with Megacorp!!

It's so exciting to be getting out of a j*b I hate, and doing something fun instead. DH is going to be working for a few more years, and I'll try the business owner thing, with a fall back plan of doing tax returns for a few months a year. Either way I'm done with the grind of corporate life.

I've been at megacorp for 19 years, and unfortunately many of them were unhappy. Pay was good though, and my 401k balance is pretty good. I'm 39, and we're technically FI if we ate ramen for the rest of our lives. Gonna w*rk enough to keep us eating better. :)
 
Congrats to all who retired YTD! I have plans to review my status in and around July after I cash in on some stock options.
 
Have been FI for a year or so but have been hesitating due to 3 kids in college at same time. 2 recently graduated, and have been able to set aside funds for the 3rd... so time to take the plunge. Recently negotiated separation to occur on 59th birthday in August..... Am not sure exactly what I will do next but am so ready to explore the options..... ;-)
 
I'm a new poster here. What do you do in a 'Class of....'? I've figured out it refers to the year of retirement but then what?

My year of retirement was 1989. Where do I find my 'Class of 1989'?
