It's official. This week I mailed in the paperwork for a 4/29/16 retirement. Just before I turn 60.

Billk400 5/27/16. I'll be 61; yea not real early, but better than most!

I see there is no standard time / length for giving notice when your retiring (like changing jobs where 2 weeks is the standard notice). I am planning to give 60 days or 8 weeks to enable the company to find and train a replacement before I am gone, but thinking about shortening to 45 days. Just don't want the company to dump crap (pain in the ass projects) on me to complete before I leave. Id give a 30 day notice, but this might be too short. Any opinions or have personal experience in this area?

I'm curious too. I have a small team of system admins. Myself and three others. One just took a job in another department and we should get a replacement requisition for him. Another is retiring in August. One would think that we would get a replacement requisition for him. But I've been told that upper management wants to see if we can be fine with just three. Hmmm, I wondering if they can do just fine with two. I've actually been angry this past week when I heard that. I have thought about giving a couple of months notice, but part of me wants to give them one month now.

Same struggles here. I also want to work from home about 30 hours per month on one project at a time for a rear after, so that factors in. I kind of settled in on giving 8-10 weeks notice. I might even potentially have a good willing replacement in mind.

I'll be giving 3 months notice next month. That pushes me out of May and into June for my last day.

I announced to my staff yesterday that I'll be leaving on April 28 (not April 26) at age 50 (and apparently I look younge than 50). Jaws dropped. So far, I've had universally positive reactions. People are happy for me, envious of me, want to know how I invest. One of my staff is threatening to file a grievance with the union to stop me from leaving :-) . Nine weeks to go.

Congratulations on having made it to the goal line.

I still recall my first morning of freedom. I was like a 6 year old on Christmas morning, so excited I couldn't sleep.

I made the announcement yesterday. My last day will be March 31st. Everyone was surprised and happy for me. It's going to be a long month of documentation and knowledge transfer.

Billk,

Many discussions on this. Here is the latest one, I think: Anyone Penalized For Early Notice?

Bottom line is that there is no standard. Some folks are shown the door the day they give notice. Others (e.g., my wife) give two years notice and are involved in interviewing their replacements. Are you in a grinding, just merged division of a megacorp, a small & collegial medical/law practice, or something in between? (Me, I gave 14-20 months, depending upon when DW's replacement gets on board.)

Edit: 4/6 --> 5/2. Turned in my notice yesterday. Extended it a bit to collect a few more perks and cover some time off for a coworker who's helped me out in the past. The "official" countdown has now started.

I am with a smaller size financial services company (insurance related). I have decided to give 8 weeks notice. I have chosen to wait AFTER the bonus is announced (very mysterious process here...no criteria to earn one, and very, very few get one, but I have for the last 4 or 5 years) at the end of March. Don't want to jeopardize the bonus. 8 weeks will be plenty of time to find my replacement and for me to give them some orientation / training to ease the transition.

Okay, I wrapped it up today. Feels great. No regrets, and I have lots to do. We're getting ready to start our nomadic life in April. We've been downsizing and selling stuff for the past year. I can't believe this is really happening!

Good to see another year class. We're celebrating our 1 yr FIRE anniversary!

Oh, I had planned to give 2 weeks notice, but cut even this down when I announced. Just enough time to clean a couple of decades of crap out of my office.

Congrats Marketwatcher!!! Now your life is totally yours. Glad to see you have plans to enjoy your time.

I have 52 more work days till I finally call it quits. Sometimes I feel like a runner stumbling to the finish line of a marathon, just hoping I make it!!!

The moment you realize....

It isn't your next vacation you're counting down the weeks to.

(6.5 weeks for me.)
