I can't ignore the spreadsheet results and have come to realize that I need to add OMY to the plan (again). Officially moving to Team 2018.

I went PT last year instead of fully retiring. Now I realize I just get annoyed having to go in those few days. Besides the numbers are so good now I cannot justify the headaches.

Do we have a list for 2017?

So have been kicking this around for a few years knowing that it would be either 2017 or 2018. Well it looks like it will be 2017, and more than likely March 1st. I may wait a little longer in 2017, but if I have three bad days in a row, watch out.
This has been planned for over ten years so pretty rock solid. I will be 52 and my DW will retire in 2020. So besides watching my newest grandson, I will probably either volunteer or pick up some P/T work to keep busy. Due to my pension it made no sense to stay in any longer. Once my DW retires we will only work P/T if we love it, or we will volunteer somewhere, maybe even stretches outside the US.
Keep checking all of the spreadsheets, just cause I am that type of person, but I have got to remember to keep my head in the game until next March.

I'm careening towards 2017, like a pinewood derby car on a mountain bike trail. DW retired at 58 yrs old last Dec 31, so we are selling the house in June and moving to a rental house 2 miles from my office (current commute is 60 miles one way). The plan is to stay there a year and then I will retire. (My original plan was to retire at the very end of 2017. But because of the rental lease, it is either May 2017 or May 2018, not in-between. Our situation would have to deteriorate quite a bit for me to go to 2018, knocking on wood.) After that, we are retiring to Albuquerque.

DW and I have decided on 07-07-17. Last one done with college (MS) May 2017, and we are FI for about 2 years already, I will be 55, DW 54. Pension kicks in and company retire health plan. Hope I last this year has been hard...

Three more years, during which I hope to reach $1M USD (am at $820k right now), adjusted for inflation. Should result in a 3.3% WR by then.

I'll have none of the OMY non-sense anymore after that, and take a year of traveling to start with.
Well, best laid plans ..
  • The dollar went up so my net worth in USD is actually down
  • In euros, my reference currency I'm ahead of schedule
  • I only worked a few months the past two years. Consulting gigs. And I sort of had the year of travel already.
  • Just recently decided to go for a startup, raising funds and such. Have to say it's a great luxury not needing immediate salaries (in contrast to two co-founders).

So I guess I'm not done with doing stuff just yet

RE postponed until further notice! If startup fails I'll go freelance a few years and look at moving to New Zealand.

I am not sure if we will be the Class of 2017 or the Class of 2018 yet. I think working OMY will help ease our nerves, though we are about FI now...unless the market drops a lot like earlier this year. My big problem tonight is I can not find a Class of 2018 thread. Does one exist? Maybe the search on the mobile app isn't working right (though it did find this thread from a search). It is kind of crazy that the Class of 2017 thread is not more popular since it is right around the corner.

Have you adjusted your asset allocation as you get closer to entering FIRE? This year hasn't been that unusual for volatility....

Got official word last month that I will be relieved of my duties on 1/13/2017! I have been waiting for this "nudge" for some time now. I actually cut a deal with the company that I would hang around and shut down this mega-corp venture in return for a substantial severance package. I was ready to leave in 2016 but I couldn't due to my agreement not to leave before all business matters were closed for this venture. DW retired last August at 55 and I will retire next January at 56. Overshot my retirement year by one year but I ain't complaining!!

Checking in...Seventeen Months and Counting

Checking in, and still counting down to the end of October 2017.

I was very stressed out and despondent these last few months, and spent some time reading old threads to find ideas of how to cope with this last year and a half, which is really dragging. I feel so strongly that I am DONE with work, and am meant to be spending my time doing other things. (The tarnished silver handcuffs that keep me grinding along are subsidized health benefits for myself and my spouse from age 55 to age 65.)

Taking inspiration from a couple of other members here, I approached my boss and asked if I could try working four days at ten hours each, and take Wednesday as the nonwork day, and she agreed!

Usually, I would arrive at work almost an hour early anyway (to make the commute less dreadful), so I only have to get up five minutes earlier than usual (and not hit the snooze button), and stay an hour later. In return, I get an entire day in the middle of the week. Never having more than two days of work in a row is AMAZING.

Crossing my fingers I will get to continue this schedule until the end.

We are only six months away from 2017 so I decided to develop a Class of 2017 listing. I took the liberty of deleting those with very few posts who had not posted in more than a year. A good many others changed their graduation dates to 2016 or 2018. Please edit or add to the list as needed.

It has been a little tough for me this year keeping myself interested at the office. I had wanted to graduate in 2015 so when four of my co-workers retired in December, I was very disappointed that I was not part of the group. But I will be in a much better place financially for waiting to 2017. I am now keeping busy with some new projects and the months are going by fast so far. A little over 14 months to go! Yahoo!

Hello Class of 2017. I am new to the site after a three year hiatus...mainly due to, in part, my original FI date being so far out in 2021, and getting sucked into work and life chaos. As you can guess by my post I have been able to shorten my work sentence by a few years for good personal financial behaivior and a promotion at work that I dis not expect. The promotion boosted my pention by 20%. I thought about changing my ID to Retire48 but I am happy to be reminded of my poor estimate. Looking forward to joining the graduating 2017 class as graduation from the biggest and toughest school in my life! I am planning to reach escape velocity 26 Aug 17.

Put me down for month certain. April 2017. Vacation carries me to June and my 55th birthday.
