Quick Update,

Just notified Megacorp my intentions to retire in Aug. I was planning to hold off until Jan 17, but my HR approached me about another position and I wanted to be transparent and give them time to plan for my departure.

The conversation was an adrenaline rush, finally letting the cat out of the bag was a relief and thrilling. It was like when i jumped off a tower to bungy jump for the first time. When you step off, there is no going back.

Interesting observation that I made the last couple weeks is that I am no longer counting the days and feeling the days drag on. Now, I feel like I should stop counting and enjoy the last 9 months of w*rk. I have been with Megacorp for 30 years and will miss some of the good parts. My shift in perspective is making the days fly by now. I didn't do it for that reason but it has been a nice side effect.

My last day at the office will be December 16. My replacement should be here after Thanksgiving for a handoff.

This is a unique and weird experience. I've already had one sendoff with several more planned. Lots of emotions involved in this separation.

Added myself back, correcting an inadvertent deletion.

Had my performance review yesterday, hopefully the last one EVER. Not so bad, really, as my current supervisor is a good friend although his father is only 1 year older than me. We've been on trips together all over the world, and even though he's young I respect him and think he's a better manager than I would ever have been. Kid's going places.

Anyway, I haven't spilled the beans to him yet so I sat there and nodded, pretty much ignoring whatever it was he wrote. All I cared about was that the rating was good (it was) so my year-end bonus will likely be decent. I find out about that next week, after which I'll have the "time for me to hang up my calculator" talk.

Today was a lunchtime meeting to discuss how we all measured in our [-]horoscopes[/-] Gallup StrengthsFinder tests. Hopefully that's the last touchy-feely management fad I'll have to endure as well. I was one of a few in the meeting on the phone and not in the room, so I just kept quiet and they pretty much forgot I was there.

Next week I'll be submitting the electronic form to increase my 401k contributions to allow it to be fully funded by my retirement date in September. I also plan to submit my request to HR for my pension estimate. HR encourages employees to do this so there are no surprises - I'm requesting it more as a courtesy since I've crunched the numbers so many times myself. Finished my last performance appraisal a couple of months ago although I will have to complete a mid-year self-assessment in March. The time is dragging and I'm getting more anxious but maybe these little retirement taskings will help me feel like I am making some progress.

It has started!

Last night was the first time I was able to go to bed and say, "That is the last time I have to..."

For me, it was the last time I have to sit through a performance/salary review. I hate those meetings. Next year when budget-planning time rolls around, I won't have to sit through the performance review process. What a relief.

We've been playing that game since late summer, albeit with pretty mundane things:

1. last time we'll have to rush back after family reunion
2. last time we'll have to rush back from a weekend with one of the kids
3. last time we have to miss the late night performances at the Americana Festival (if we are in town)--shows that start after midnight? Oh My.
4. last time we'll have to experience the "fall back" to standard time while commuting to work....​
