We built our retirement home about 5 -8 years early and use it on the weekends (it's about a 30 minute ferry ride and 40 minute drive from our primary residence). We've been doing this for about 4 years. We love our weekends on the island and are now planning to fix up the primary residence and hope to sell it next year. Then I can call Dave Ramsey and exclaim, "we're debt free!". Keeping up two homes is a lot of work and I hate paying property taxes for two homes. We will rent an apartment on the mainland until we both retire and move to the island full time.
