Evidence Folks are aging better

Ran across this bit of positive news on aging. Seems folks now in their early 90's are functioning better both physically and mentally than counterparts born 10 yrs earlier (i.e. those born 1915 vs 1905 at same age, educational background, etc.). As the researchers put it, the elderly are functioning better for longer than earlier generations.

90 is the new 70? Or 70 is the new 50? Anyway, I know a lady in Indiana that just turned 101. She is active, plays bridge, and had to give up her car at 95 (just didn't see the stop signs as well).

I also have seen a lot of family and friends pass under 60. It's a crapshoot.

Last year I took a course through our local Osher Lifelong Learning Institute called "Aging and the Brain". It was taught by an emeritus faculty member from the Univ of San Francisco Medical School. The issue of lifespan came up. He said that the basic human lifespan was probably about 100 years. The goal for medicine was to improve the quality of life longer as we approach that age. He showed similar statistics in agreement with your article.

I just went for a ride with an 88 year old in his new BMW M3, and it wasn't scary at all! I hope I'm doing that when I'm 88.
