most states don't give you anything if you leave work.
Thankfully I have a severance which includes unemployment bennies.

As far as a log, I figured I'ld cut n'paste from the Sunday paper 3 leads and date them.... never send a resume (as this could lead to real work). If called, I could produce the log. Leave it the "them" to chase a resume.

Good enough?

Re: Final Week at the Job Trough

I will be joining the ranks of the unemployed very soon too . Only just over $300/wk in TX I think I can make about $60/wk in another job or self-employment before they start cutting benefits. No problem, DH is going to get a fat 1099 this year.

Just wondering what happens when you go on vacation while on unemployment. I will be going on a cruise for 5 days. Do they skip benefits for that whole week or do they even tell you you can not go?

Where I have lived (several states) you have to be "available and looking for work" to get benefits. This is often interpreted very loosely

Re: Final Week at the Job Trough

I have a similar concern. I will be in Thailand for a month.
I figured that I would stop applying online for my weekly claims and when I returned, begin to apply again.
Since the claims system appears to be computer controlled, I wonder if a red flag would go up if I skipped 4 weeks?

Re: Final Week at the Job Trough

In Wisconsin one of the requirements for collecting unemployment for a particular week is that you have to be available for work. I have been in another state while on unemployment and did my weekly call-in and indicated that I was available for employment even though I was in another state... which actually was true but on a cruise ship... I don't know!

My guess (only a guess) is yes, it would look suspicious.

Is there a phone number to call in rather than doing it online?* It'll be international long-distance but I remember from six years ago here in WI that it was computerized phone system, so you will just be pushing buttons and will hopefully make short calls.

I wonder if phone connections are easier to make from Thailand than accessing the Internet from over there.

Re: Final Week at the Job Trough

I wonder whether there is any matching of SSN and customs' declaration forms to catch the unemployed that working much harder on their tan on a foreign beach than on getting a new job. When I lived in Canada, the friendly folks at the work centers told me that was common practice. (seems quite a hassle though to catch the few disobedient ones).

Re: Final Week at the Job Trough

I know I could continue to claim my benefits online while I'm overseas at an internet cafe but I thought is would be safer not to checking off that I was available for each of the 4 weeks that I would be in Thailand.
I'll probably make a call and ask them what is the procedure when one is out of town. I suspect they won't care. When I got laid of in March, I thought that I could not get my unemployment benies while I was collecting my severance pay. I found out 2 months later that the severance payment did not effect my unemployment benies and they never questioned why I started collecting 2 months later.
