"Hippie" commune or land co-op.......

I am investigating the possiblity of forming what they used to call a "hippie commune". Inspiration for the idea comes from Rob Roy's book titled "Mortgage Free".

Basically the idea is to find/bring together a group of 10-20 like-minded individuals/families to purchase a tract of land which would ordinarily be out of reach for any of us as individuals, but group buying power gets us all our own little slice of heaven. The primary focus of the search will be SE'n TN, W'n NC/SC, N'n AL/GA.

I will be placing ads in several national magazines; Mother Earth News, The Backwoodsman, Back Home Magazine, Country Living, and The Grit to name a few. If you are familiar with the book and the magazines then you have an idea of what kind of community I am attempting to establish. I'm still working on the details of the initial response letter I will send to folks who express an interest. But if you are interested more details you can reach me here.

BOP, have you ever dealt with any kind of coop or commune before? I have lived in them for a few years and had other dealings with them. They definately have their merits (among others, I met DW in a co-op that had co-ed cattle showers ), but they can be frustrating enough as organizations that I'm not sure I would be eager to repeat the experience for something as important as where I live.

Nope, never done it. Never heard about any downside to it either. But then again, usually it's only the successful ones who write books.

I do have some reservations about belonging to a "homeowner's association", where other folks can decide what I can do on my own land. But other than that, what kind of frustrations are you talking about. Share you experience, please. You can e-mail me, if you'd prefer to not tie up the board bandwidth. Iron Mike

See if you can find a closed base from a brac and put the proposal to the government for using the land and revitalizing the local community. There might be free land available if any of these closed areas is in an acceptable location.
