We're going to celebrate our anniversary the week after Carnival. I don't really care if we stay in the French Quarter, but would like to be within walking or public transport distance of the usual attractions. (We'll rent a car for excursions farther afield.) Clean/comfortable/reasonable/quiet are what we're after, not the FQ ambiance while we're asleep. We'll spend the big bucks on food & music :) :).

I vaguely remember from my one visit decades ago that the garden district might be a possibility.

Also interested on interesting things/places a little out of the ordinary.

Any ideas appreciated.

Hotel de L'eau Vive, down the street from Mothers restaurant, across the street from the FQ, the casino, and a half mile from the River Walk. Small, quiet, friendly, reasonable.

It's a time share. I own a couple weeks there and the above reasons are why we chose it. I don't benefit from you staying there, just full disclosure. Have fun, and try the gumbo at Mothers. Or maybe bbq shrimp and a turbodog at Ralph and Cacoo's.

My BIL made a $600 Hilton reservation in July (a month before Katrina) for the following January.

Hilton refused to offer a refund and wouldn't even negotiate for another location or date. Their attitude was "Hilton is open for business even if New Orleans isn't. Take it or leave it."

I don't know if the hotel has any redeeming qualities to override this consideration.

We went to New Orleans in Jan.2005.We stayed at the Hilton .It did have redeeming qualities .Great location ,easy walking distance to French Quarter, across from the casino ,next to the Aquarium and it also was a trolley stop .I got airfare from Florida and three nights hotel and a few other goodies for $300 a person from Southwest airlines. I highly recommend the pub tour.

My Mom has stayed at the JW Marriott Hotel, and found it to be very nice. There are two Marriott Hotels right by each other, and she said the JW was her choice of the two.

It's on Canal St. right by the FQ and the central business district. The tour company that we travel with ALOT, uses the JW Marriott when they go to NO. It's clean, well appointed, and with a great location....and security!
