I come pretty close to the definition, in the linked article, of people classified as "influentials." One person in ten purportedly is in this category, and the other nine people in ten purportedly view them as "examples."
Well, if I am an "influential," I have the feeling that a lot less than one out of the other nine gives a hoot about what I say or do. One or two people out of ten don't make a majority. But on the other hand, if those one or two people are in the "sensible center" (Colin Powell's term) on most public issues, they are the ones who can "swing" public decisions -- especially when four or five of the others don't bother to vote.
As one out of some 280 million Americans, none of us can expect to snap our fingers and have everything done exactly as they would prefer, but anyone who chooses to engage in public affairs has a good chance of "leveraging" their influence thousands of times over. That may not provide total happiness, but it may relieve some frustration.
