We all know Mr. and Mrs. Howell were FIRE, but what about the rest of the people on the island?
As soon as they boarded that tiny ship and landed on the island, they didn't have to work for money, so maybe they technically were FIRE. They had a zero budget since they could not spend any money anyway, and they didn't even need to worry about a SWR.
They has no phones, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury, so they only had to worry about harvasting and cooking food, and trying to keep the headhunters from killing them.

That is a good insight about G's Island. In many hollywood movies you find the whore/saint syndrone. The whore has a golden hart (see "Pretty Woman").
On G's Island they split the whore/saint into two characters.
Now that I think about it, the show does have its Freudian aspects:
Id = Gilligan
Ego = Skipper
Superego = Professor
Libido = Ginger/Maryann - whore/saint; sex/motherhood
Howels = the physical world's wants and needs
This is the same Freudian set up in the original Star Trek
Id = McCoy
Ego = Kirk
Superego = Spock
Libido = Scotty

What an interesting thread, truly. The analogies and banter are great. I never saw Dobie but had heard of Maynard Krebs - although my understanding of the Beat generation was more than aversion to work and rather dark for a philosophical bent.

The Beat generation is a very misunderstood generation. The idea that it was not in favor of work is just a factor of the times. It was a time of a strong middle class and work ethic. Those into beat were artist interested in the new wave of art, music, poetry etc., some might say interllectuals and the begining of the counterculteral movement in this country. I think they were of the baby bust generation befor the boomer generation. The beat generation came just before the dominance of the baby boomers and the rise of youth/popular culture.
I'm no expert but read "Howel" by Ginsberg?, Jack Keroak. I think Herman Hess may fit in here but I'm not sure.
