Wife had an 84 Subaru GL...........that thing would not die....... I thought back then they had horizontally oppsed cylinders? Maye I am wrong......

I have a couple neighbors that own Subarus, and they love them. The only concern I have about them is pretty poor gas mileage........what gives? I suppose the AWD sucks some mileage out, but NOONE that owns a Subrau brags about fuel economy.........

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

Hmmm, I get about 28MPG on the highway, 23 around town with a naturally aspirated 2003 Legacy Wagon. For a car that weighs almost as much as a Crown Vic, that's not too shabby. Since I spend most of my tie on the highway, I figure I am giving up 2 or 3MPG for AWD and more weight.

And yes, they still have horizontally opposed cylinders ("flat 4"). Only now Subie offers flat 6s and turbo-charged flat 4s. The most souped up turbo flat 4 generates 300HP (think "poor man's Porsche"). The owners magazine had an article about a rally race of some sort where the Subaru team managed to completely roll over the car, but still managed to come in 2nd overall.

That's pretty good..........I do 50/50 driving on freeway and town. Blended gas mileage is 28-29 mpg.....straight highway is 34-35 mpg. It seems a little weird that the Civic gets the same mileage, and that GM is pushing their Aveo for gas mileage, and it's a manual, and gets the same highway MPG as my Accord.........

If mileage were the only consideration, I would still be driving my '95 Escort, which routinely got 40MPG on the highway.

I'm happy to have cars as my one major black hole for money. I'm lucky enough that I get a lease through work for a BMW 3 Series. I love the car, but I'm happy the lease is up soon so I can replace it with the new twin turbo 335i 8)

I also have my little summer toy for autoX and cruising.

Thankfully, my wife likes cheap cars

i got the bmw x3 and love it. out of all the cars i owned in my life i have to admit driving this one is an experience. the handling of a bmw is just so nice. if retirement wasnt so near i can see leasing an m3 just to experiance having one in my lifetime.

The kids haven't been in the subaru since we bought a mammoth Honda Odyssey last year. Yes, I also don't want to talk about that pig's fuel consumption. But since we drive it less than 10k miles a year, I am not as concerned about it.

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

I just traded in my 12yo Mitsubishi Galant, on a used pre-driven 2006 Chevy HHR with 13000 miles on it. I get ~22-23mpg in town, and ~29-32mpg on the highway.

This is the first 'used' car I've bought since 1976. The Mitsu' was the LAST new car I ever plan on buying. I'll let somebody else pay first year depreciation!!! Current list price on my HHR is $18,200....used....I paid $12,000 plus $2,000 trade-in. The Mitsu' was ready for tires, brakes, hoses, battery, and the tranny was starting to go south....it was time to trade or scrap!!!

It makes me chuckle.....my old Mitsubishi was a Japanese car....built by Americans in Normal, Illinois.....My CHEVY HHR is an "American" car built in MEXICO, with a Toyota engine that was built in the USA!!! I went to a meeting at the local UAW convention center a few years ago, and they frowned upon my "foreign" Mitsu'.....even though built here in IL. I wonder what they would say if I drove in up there in my "American" car built south of the border :

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

My DW & I bought a new '07 Camry LE back in July. I just got back from a conference in OK City, drove the Camry since my '98 Ford truck is getting a little long in the tooth with high mileage, plus gets only about 18 mpg. The Camry was great on the trip, & it really does sip the gas, compared to the truck anyhow . Nice, smooth, quiet & comfy ride. It's actually the DW's car, she just let me borrow it for the trip. I'd reccommend either the Camry or the Honda Accord, which we test drove as well. We went with the Camry primarily because it just seems a little bit bigger on the inside, & I'm a fairly large guy who needs his space! Our Camry is the 4 cyl model, with a decent accessories package inc aluminum wheels, & we paid $21,500 for it. We traded in her 1990 Honda Accord, which we've had since it was new. Still getting her/us around at 250k miles, but it was time to go.

Good info. I looked at some Camrys this lazy Sunday afternoon. They are sharp looking. Does the 4 cyl have plenty of power? I plan to travel some next year and I want a good ride along with decent gas mileage.

I probably will. When gas prices are pushing $3/gl again, I will be glad I did.

How do you like the HHR? I find it an intriguing looking car, but I wonder how well it is put together.

Well, if it's any indication, my buddy that has a Chevy Impala asked if my Accord had a V-6 in it after we whipped onto the Interstate last week. When I told him it was a 4-cyl, he spit out his coffee..........
