Retired again from retirement PT job

Retired 6 years ago after 32 years with mega corp and have spent the last five tax seasons working for H&R Block doing tax returns. The first four years were fun but this last year just drug on and the countless stupid memos, secret shoppers, mystery phone calls, and silly season directives from the clueless executives running the place just reinforced the fact that it was time to move on. Back to golf, motorcycle riding, playing music and best of all spending time with my four and six year old grandchildren. No real point to this post, just wanted to rant a bit. Suppose when the kids get back in school this fall I might get restless and try my hand at something else, senior aged porn star, power ranger, guitar god, golf pro, who knows !.

I commend you for lasting that long. Just your description made me want to curl up into the fetal position and cry. So glad to not have to deal with idiots anymore.

Maybe you should pace yourself and deeply explore one or two at a time before moving on to the next...

I"retired" from megacorp in 1998. The following year they hired me back, on a contract basis at an obscene salary, to run training classes. That gig lasted a year. Then I hired on (full time) with SAIC (a gov't contractor) to do work for the GSA (mostly working from home). That gig lasted a year too. After that I worked part time as a substitute teacher for 3 or 4 years until I decided I'd better do something else before I strangled one of the little darlings. Worked one summer for a nursery (the plant discount was awesome). Next part time job was for an eldercare agency. That was a really good job and I lasted 5 years. Finally really retired two years ago.

That's the great thing about retiring! A lot of experimenting. I'm sure you'll find something to occupy your time.

Congrats on your job completion. Your situation turned sour. My situation at Block is finally turning around in that I had a good year.
Doing your job is not the problem. It's all that other crap that is a downer. One of my volunteer gigs started to go in that direction so it was time for me to move on.
I am struggling for the right words but when it seems like "w*rk", it is time to move on.

Just in case you're interested in a volunteer gig next year (and I realize you didn't say you were), the AARP has programs in most areas where volunteers do taxes for seniors, generally of the lower income variety.

I've just finished my 6th year of doing taxes for BLOCK and there are many things I don't like about the job, (but I've never found anything better as far as flexible schedule and matching to my abilities. ) I

Went through the same feelings after working for HR Block for five years. Really had fun supporting the online services too but the corporate crap & retail store mentality finally got to me, especially after working as one of their office managers. I found a gig working as a seasonal employee for a local CPA firm helping them during the tax season. Great fit, they let me work whatever hours I want to, no benefits, no expectation of working after April 18th, 50% greater pay than HRB ever paid me. Of course, had two 55 hour weeks end of March working 15 straight days (gotta be of value to them)! Just completed my 6th season with the CPA firm. Needless to say, the clientele is very different with more complex returns than HRBlock typical client.

This is after early retirement at age 50 with two toddlers, now teenagers.
