Hi Cut-Throat! My son lived in Eugene for years.
My brother lived nearby. They both loved the area.
Wouldn't work for me. The liberals alone would
spoil it

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

(grumble, grumble)

Be forewarned that after you spend 8 pages choosing what you want in a location you get 2 pages asking for your personal information and interests. I gave them a humorous name and the address of a local store I'm P.O.'ed at but gave them my standard spambait email address. However I think a totally fake email would have been fine since I don't plan to go back to the site and log in, and it gave me my ideal places, anyway.

(end of grumble)

Wow. Louisville, KY? Whoulda thunk? I'm 2 hours away...maybe I should give it a visit.

Next cities, in order of rank: Oklahoma City, Idaho Falls, Ogden, El Paso, Spokanne.

Oh my goodness, there's 3 more pages of cities, but I guess those are the top 6 for me.

Louisville, maybe. OKC, I don't think so. Idaho Falls is worth a look. Ogden? Beautiful, but the Mormans really creep me out. (Any concentrated group does.) El Paso...mas o menos. Spokanne deserves a visit.

Just a random thought: let's create a fund to send John Galt to Europe for a couple of weeks. Ah, the political hilarity...

Some interesting cities from my other pages: Knoxville, Tacoma, Nashville, Kent, Clarksville, Loveland...actually I like most of the rest of the pages better than page 1.

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

BMJ,

It only asks for a name and address and an e-mail, The other information is all optional, if you read it. I also used a spam mail account and Joe Blow, 123 nowhere st. etc. etc.

If this makes you upset you've got it made

I'm sure it would be a bigger hit than Paris Hilton down on the farm. The first place we should send John is Paris.....just imagine the dialogue between him and a snotty frenchman!

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

Given the commerciality of the site, I wonder how much any "chamber of commerce contributions" affect the results. I ran it several times slightly tweaking the results. I noticed that just saying I like smaller govt and reduced taxes resulted in NO results in california, even though the bulk of the rest of the input I gave it would have matched MANY local cities. Several places that I would LOVE to live in werent listed even when I said I loved taxes and large govt.

Even when I said I love oceans, lakes and various boating and water activities it suggested Las Cruces New Mexico as a page 1 listing.

BTW, my new name is Haywood Jablowme.

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

Wide open plains was I think the only geographic option I didn't check, yet OKC and Tulsa were fairly high on my list. Whaaa? They aren't quite like the midwest, but I don't recall any distinguishing features on my last drive through.

I don't recall any cities from California, Arizona or New Mexico which I found odd given my input. Nothing from the Northeast, either, or for that matter the enire East coast. I would think something meeting my criteria would be in there somewhere, but maybe it really isn't.

Given the marketing nature of the site I suspect some skewed results, but then I'm very cynical these days.

Even with as much griping as I've done about it, though, it's still a fun exercise and gives me some travel ideas.

I hadn't thought about a reality show based on John Galt in Europe. Now that would be worth watching. By the way, before someone jumps on the idea let me clarify the fund would bring him back, too. I'm not trying to get rid of him, just give him some exposure to real leftists to redefine his concept of the ultimate liberal.

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

1. Houghton-Hancock, MI
2. Metaline Falls, WA
3. Kalispell, MT
4. Spearfish, SD
5. Sheridan, WY
6. Seward, AK
7. Homer, AK
8. Dillon, MT

All places I would love to visit. I was trying to get a job in Marquette MI but it didn't pan out.

The average housing price in Houghton is 86K. Not for climatic girlie men due to the heavy snows, though.

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

My number one was Norfolk, VA, followed by alot of other what seemed to be interchangable medium-sized cities in NC and VA. Then it was Bergen County NJ, where I live, NYC, Manhattan and Long Island.

I'm ok with where I'm at, and this seems to confirm it, however unscientific the survey is.....

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

I have not travelled much around the good ol USA so I have never been to any of these locations. They have got a Northeastern liberal relocating to the following,

1 ) Little Rock, Arkansas
2 ) Fayetteville, Arkansas
3 ) San Bernardino, California
4 ) Corvallis, Oregon
5 ) Natchitoches, Louisiana
6 ) Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana
7 ) Salem, Oregon
8 ) Las Cruces, New Mexico
9 ) Eugene, Oregon
10) Charleston, West Virginia

I am considering re-locating to another state, a couple years after I retire in 2005. This would allow me to take a large windfall selling my debt free 2 fam house and reduce my state tax and health insurance. Although I am single and don't presently have serious ties, it is going to be a little tough to move, as I have lived in the same area for most of my life.

Any one familiar with any of the above places?

MJ

MJ,

I had a lot of the places on my list that you had on yours. A lot of Oregon as well as some of the other places. Mine were in a little different order.

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

Hi MJ! I have been to every one of the 10 locations
on your list. No kidding! I can not comment on them
right now as my feelings are hurt by those wishing to send me to Europe and/or expose me to liberals. I am exposed to entirely too many liberals already. As far as
a "reality show", I'm game. Someone needs to show me some serious money first

Try the following to see where you should live:

Re: Simple Quiz to Find your Ideal Retirement Loca

Well it certainly wasn't my aim to prevent John Galt from commenting, so nevermind. I just thought he could appreciate us U.S. liberals a little more... .

Actually, they couldn't pay me enough to put me on a "reality show". No way.

dex, looks like findmyspot.com and findyourspot.com are the same thing. It even identified me by my fake name Phil M.

mj, I would think neither Louisiana nor Arkansas would be very liberal friendly, but I haven't spent much time there. Shreveport is a casino town. Las Cruces is close to El Paso.

Hi TH! I heard today that Monica Lewinsky was voting
Republican this year. The Democrats left a bad taste in her mouth.

Places I've seen.

"Idaho Falls"? Seriously? The Navy ran a shore-based training reactor there from the 1950s-80s (it may still be critical). Lifestyle & amenity reports were so bad that I chose to spend my six months in Schenectady, NY instead. But maybe it's changed since 1983.

Norfolk?!? Clearly these retirement locations weren't chosen for their benign traffic conditions. Or maybe they figure retirees will only venture out between rush hours. Last time I was stuck in Norfolk, that appeared to be 10:00-10:15 AM and 2:00-2:15 PM.

An old shipmate lived all over the U.S. and chose to leave the service for Corvallis, OR. It's supposedly a great place to live, although it's close enough to Portland for real estate values to be affected by the "Best Places to Live" magazine articles.

I don't know how to game this website to make it cough up a Hawaii location. But upon further reflection, apparently I've been avoiding living in any state beginning with the letter "A".
