A SIP phone typically connects to the Internet via WiFi, then talks to your router back home, and the ADSL router is what makes the call. Since VoIP calls are typically free, this allows you to sit in a McDonald's with WiFi in Prague, talk into your mobile phone, and call the US for nothing via your router in France.

I think it is much simpler if you simply use something like Skype over WiFi running on your mobile phone or mobile device? This is what I do with my Ipod touch, and the calls to the USA are free. And I don't have to maintain any infrastructure, so to speak, Skype does that for me.

Some (most?) smartphones can connect to Wi-Fi networks as well as 3G for data, so that could be an alternative when you can't get 3G data.

Yeah, I am just not willing to go to the trouble and expense for 3G. Over the life of a phone, let say 3 years, a 3G plus SmartPhone is about 5x more expensive than something like an Ipod Touch that works over WiFi. The cost difference is partly because the initial device is more expensive but mostly because you are paying monthly charges on 3G. That is a huge difference, and it is also a lot more complexity for travelers. For some people this will be worth the time and money cost, for others no.
