Tesla Model 3
So did anyone put down a deposit on a Model 3 this week?
I had no interest in standing in line with 200 people waiting to place an order, but I did go online at 7:30pm when online orders first went live and placed my deposit. I see they have booked almost 200,000 deposits now, so I'm guessing a lot of people are going to see those cars before me. But it was kind of fun to participate in the process.
I've never been involved in a kickstarter campaign, and I've never been an early adopter of new products. But since the $1,000 was fully refundable, I figured, what the heck. I could use a new car 2-3 years from now and they sure make nice ones.

They are quite beautiful cars, but so high technology that you'd need a dealership close by in case of any problems. No shade tree mechanics can work on any Tesla.
And unfortunately most of the country doesn't have a Tesla dealership close by. Heck, my nearest Lexus or BMW dealer is 1 1/2 hrs. away, even.

Rumor has it that Tesla is building a service center a few miles from our house. Construction is going pretty fast so we should know in a few months.

Not available anywhere until late 2017. And then current Tesla owners and California residents will be first in line. Another article in the other thread was guessing 2019 for new, non CA owners

Chevy Bolt then!
A lot of the 200k people who preordered will not be getting the $7500 tax credit.

Yeah but Leaf only has like 60 mile range.
Good for short commutes, going to a couple of stores.

Shouldn't the Model S be followed by the Model T? Oh, wait.

Good new for Extended Market Index Funds.
Put few options into it and you are looking at 45-50k car... I pass .

San Diego is awash in e-car charging stations as well as Model Ss, but still no hydrogen stations. However, if you want to mosey on up to Santa Monica, the Toyota Mirai is for sale. I'd have to drive up to San Juan Cap every time I wanted to (charge it, fill it up, power it?)

Tesla has (Tesla owned) retail showrooms but NO dealerships. These showrooms will facilitate a test drive, but I think you order the car online. No dickering/negotiation. No independently owned dealerships. It's a completely different sales model. They had to get the law changed in NJ to allow this model... they were going to abandon sales in NJ if the law hadn't been changed.
I agree with Alldone - San Diego has charging stations everywhere. There's only one supercharger station (near my old work and in the shadow of Qualcomm corp. HQ.) But most malls have (pay) charging stations. I see Tesla S models on the road everytime I go further than the grocery store... and even then, sometimes. Not quite as ubiquitous as the BMW... but getting there.

If you have the self driving model, it just drives itself back to the factory.

The rumors were that it would be the Model "E". After the Model S, the Model X, you could buy one of each and have SEX in your garage!
But the Model "3" is kind of the internet/slang twist on "E", S3X instead of SEX, etc.
