Mr. Purron is very happy after a week + of retirement. He's busy planning out the garage (man cave) we're building. He spent a large part of his career doing project management and can finally use those skills for something near and dear to his heart.

I attended a number of send offs for him this past month. Can't even begin to express how proud I am of him. 33 + years on the job and leaving on such a high note.

We're in heaven.....just wish we could dance this well!!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

A little background, Age 55, longtime slave employee at Midwest MegaCorp. Had trouble thinking of a username but since TodaysTheDay as in my last day at Midwest MegaCorp, it seemed to fit.

Lucky enough to have a pension starting immediately and a modest nestegg to fund a modest lifestyle.

Good luck to the rest of the class of 2011.

Welcome!!! Glad you finally "decloaked". Hope to hear more about your retirement experience.

Been retired a few years myself and my husband just retired this month. We're working on getting used to being around each other more

Excellent point, leaving active employment in the year that you turn 55 allows you to tap you 401k without the 10% penalty. Since that is the biggest part of my modest nestegg, it was surely part of the plan.

Don't forget to keep this updated! It's great to see people gradually moving into the next stage, I'm starting to get antsy about it and wonder how people manage to navigate the last few months. Not an easy task, I think.

I am happy to announce that I will be joining the 2011 club. I have given notice that I will retire from MegaUniversity on June 30, 2011. It is a surreal feeling to plan to leave the place where I've spent so much time for 35 years, but I can't think of any reason to stay, and there are many reasons to go.

DH, a realtor, has unofficially "semi-retired" and is greatly reducing his hours. He is splitting all his listings now, and only working with repeat clients. His business is toxic, and I'm proud of how he's separating himself from it.

I really appreciate this forum, and the good folks who share their experience here -- it has given me the tools and encouragement to make a plan and work it.

Cheers!

Current plan is to FIRE on Independence Day (however it may be a month or two earlier or later depending on whether business at MegaCorp deteriorates or improves during next 4-5 months).

Hope I did this right. Midpack brought me over here. My magic date is May 31. Been planning for retirement since I met with a financial planner at age 30, and was planning to retire at 50, but that seemed a little early when I got there. Only told the boss a couple of weeks ago and he hasn't told anyone else except the owner of the company. So next week I'm telling everyone myself. Seems like a wierd way to go. Been with this company for 22 years. I am still very stressed about the decision, but I know it will turn out well.

Packman (huge lifetime Packers fan - 2011 Super Bowl Champs - seems fit to retire on that note!)
