My date moved from 3/28/2014 to 6/27/2014 as I was asked to stay until then to complete a transition to the new management team. I will then get severance and a bonus equivalent to a one year's salary. Not too bad of an exchange for an additional 3 months of stress free work.

My RE date is only about 6 months out and I have started to get clarification from HR on some of the rules on vesting and bonus payouts. In the past 6 months, I had secretly hoped for a layoff package with a year of severance and so was very tight lipped about my plans. Now I am starting to hear of faux "firing for performance" and wondering if I would be better off sharing my plans earlier. The thinking is that if they know I am retiring it would make it more difficult for them to come up with a "cause" and this could protect me from exiting before the bonus payout and stock option vesting this summer. It seems like a tough call...thoughts?

Planning to FIRE this year but like many here I am scared of making the jump, even if my spreadsheet says I am ok to go. Having sleepless nights - like tonight - thinking about FIREing.

I think most mega corps have a somewhat similar cycle: Rating phase followed by a payout phase. Typically, there's an eligibility date (have to be employed) just to be rated, then 1-2 mos of rating, followed by another eligibility date (have to be employed) to get a bonus.

Your suggested strategy might guarantee a (smaller?) bonus versus no? bonus. I suggest you ask HR about the total cycle before making your decision. And, remember, HR works for The Company, not you.

Obgyn...I also had anxiety before retiring. I think that is normal. It is a big lifestyle change and something we had not done before. I kept running the numbers over and over, again. Logic helps, but man is still an emotional animal. Once you get closer, papers are signed...you will mellow out. I understand your post.

I had been anguishing for months, but when I got up on day one of post job it is like a lead weight came off me.

About a year before I retired, I too had my anxiety level go way up. Fortunately, it only lasted about a month.

It will take a while to get in the groove and learn slow down. I am used to being goal oriented and feel like I am always having to be doing something to justify my day. I will be leaning on you guys at times for insights.

There's going to be many more folks retiring this year like us, and we will be here cheering them on.
My annual leave $$$ was in the Jan 17th check...yippee! I am so glad I saved those hours, it was a nice chunk of money to add to my various funds. I noticed money was deposited into my TSP, I guess that was because I worked the 1st week of January. I had already maxed out 2013. I'm slowly getting in the groove and realizing I'm not on vacation, I'm retired! My goal is to de-clutter my house during 2014.....and I haven't started yet...feeling a little guilty, but also know it's OK to spend a couple of months without a schedule. Life is great!

I am so exhausted and burned out from working 12-hour days I don't have the energy to have anxiety. I just hope I don't die of a stroke or heart attack before October when I do retire.

I am retiring at age 54 after working full-time for 34 years. I have never had a 2-week vacation. Due to my job demands I am only allowed one week off at a time. I call the place the "Concentration Camp" but only outside of work of course.

By leaving before age 55 which is considered "full retirement" a friend of mine who used to work in H.R. calculated I am walking away from $350,000 if I did live to be 85. Calculating in COLAs at 3% a year etc. My Mom lived to be 92 so that is possible if I live beyond October.

I said I don't care. Health is Wealth and I am bankrupt with daily Migraines, back pain from sitting 12 hours, and other affects from the constant stress.

Money is nothing if you don't have your health.

I agree, I think it's going to take awhile for the FREEDOM to sink in. I am so stoked not to have to cram errands into the weekend. @ REWahoo, that definitely will be a luxury for me too.

Cheers, Cassie
Congrats Cassie. You must be CSRS? I have to wait until March for my first interim check because I am FERS. Waiting on my A/L to pay the bills until March 1. Rolling my TSP next month and I'll probably do 72t withdrawals. TSP is the third leg of my FERS retirement.

OPM? They are the great mystery. I am interested in what my interim payments will be and how long they will take? I have been told my recent retirees from my Agency the interim payments were more then they expected and the agency retirement numbers were nearly spot on with OPM's final calculations.

Yes, I'm CSRS...and as mentioned in 2 or 3 posts above...my AL $$$ was deposited Jan 17th right on schedule. I'm going to take an 18% withdrawal from my TSP balance and leave the remaining. Good luck with your 3-legged stool :-) keep us posted. I'll post in Feb regarding OPM and my 1st interim check.

I mentioned something along those lines about six months ago to my wife. I found out that was the wrong thing to say. So now, I just think it...
