Retiring June 30, 2014, after 30 years of work for a school district as a teacher/administrator. I will be 58 years old, a good pension to live on, and a retirement account for travel. My pension would go up 6% if I stayed another year, but I just can't do it. I need to retire.

I'll be leaving my job on March 1st 2014. I'm really looking forward to getting out and I'm still around so that I can get my 10 years to vest in the health plan.

I'm close to being FI as long as I am careful with my spending, but I don't know if I'll really ER just yet. I'm putting some feelers out to see if anyone wants to hire a 50 something physicist; I'm not optimistic. I could probably get a job at NASA, but I'd have to move which would be a pain. So the only thing I know for sure is that I'll be out the door come 2014. maybe I'll just take a year's sabbatical to "find myself".

Thanks. I have to give at least 60 days notice. It would be nice to have something part time or maybe the NASA job sorted out before I hand in the resignation letter.

Those who had no indication were given June as the month. Those who planned for a later year, but were trying for 2014 were given December. June 16, 2014! The day after my 55th!

We were born a couple of months apart. I'm going after the flexibility of the 55 rule (leaving in the year I turn 55 therefore unfettered access to the 401k funds). But as I understand it, you don't need to wait for your birthday for that advantage. But not wanting to tip my hand, I can't say anything before January, since there's the possibility of getting "walked to the door". Just gotta love this work culture...NOT!

Although, this year our HR department removed the 401k distribution option at 55, other than "all or nothing". That means I'll be doing a 72t, more complicated, but still doable.

I just hit a milestone. When I logged in to my broker account today, it informed me I can now upgrade my IRA account to receive a debit card and a free set of checks. Must mean I hit the penalty free age for withdrawals. A little over 6 months to go.

Oh no, I thought I had 61 weeks to retirement. It turns out I've got 104,061. Damn.


I'm becoming a big fan of countdown calendars, btw. I didn't see the benefit early on, but once you start seeing those weeks click down, it gives you a sense of progress and momentum. One of my favorite rituals at the end of the day Friday is changing the "number of weeks to retirement" on my little whiteboard. It was 77 when I started. Now it's 61. I can feel it getting closer.

p.s. My Sept. 1, 2014 date is actually my "eligible for ER" date. 53+17yrs of service. I won't give notice until that date is passed, so I'm not yet sure what my actual retirement date will be. It might be later in the year. I do hope to get out in 2014, though.

It's finally definite for me. I'll be retiring in 2014, unless they kick me out before the end of this year. Which is actually a possibility. So you can add Masquernom to the 2014 list. Will probably retire officially the first week of June, 2014. Last work day will probably be the end of April. Cutting the cord at age 56.

I'm pulling the plug in April 2014 at age 56. My days left spreadsheet tells me 189 work days and 280 total days until I begin to live life!

I've have a countdown on my retirement plan spreadsheet. It includes total days and working days until retirement. I didn't pay that much attention to it until I hit the 2 year mark, and then 1 year. I finally got an app for my phone, but I had to fake it out to get the countdown right.

I will be 56 in January. That's my minimum retirement age with the Feds under the FERS program. I would have liked to go sooner but I am under the Golden Handcuff Plan. The younger people will have their minimum retirement ages later, on a sliding scale. I am afraid they probably have not saved like I had either, and will be working longer.
