After 20 years at the megahospital, December 31st was my last day. About a week before the 31st, my manager asked what I wanted for the usual retirement fare: cake or cookies; I opted for cake. When the 31st arrived, a few of my close colleagues took me out to lunch. Then I packed up my personal belongings, turned in my badge and parking pass. No cake ever arrived (not that I needed the calories!!). No exit interview. No pension packet even though I had requested it twice. As I walked to the elevators, several staff ran up to me and asked if I had been fired. No, I told them, I was retiring. Wish I would have thought to pull out my phone and take a picture of all those shocked expressions. Seems my manager or the director had not sent any notification out to the department, which is pretty standard for long term employee retirements. Guess I could have been offended, but why. I'm just glad to be done and outta there.
Four days of retirement. Four nights of dreaming about work and waking up at 4:45am. Might take awhile to get that out of my system!
