From a Uruguay forum

Things seem to have deteriorated since 2008. Sad. I wanted to go there one day.

I considered a trip there about 15 years ago because of the great windsurfing. I remember at the time reading cautions about crime. It sounds like things have stayed about the same. I wouldn't want a house in paradise if I had to wall myself off from the locals.
