Got up early for DD's 8:00 am soccer game. Then refereed the game after that (getting better-it's only my second time). Pulled my left quad during the second half so gimped through the rest of the game. Afterwards, browsed/grazed my way through Costco in my ref uniform (stylin!)

Swung by the thrift shop on the way home and scored a beautiful work-appropriate sweater for $5. Brand new!

Made it home and am now lounging on the couch with a beer and an ice pack while surfing the net. I'm hoping to take a nap, too.

Took the car in for a new set of tires early before breakfast.

Had a hearty breakfast w/ DW and DS, then set about for some gardening before the morning got too hot.

Picked the car up.

Marinated some pork and chicken w/ some veggies for kabobs later.

Watched some college football.

Fired up the grill and made dinner.

Relaxed w the rest of the wine we opened in front of the tv for the rest of the evening.

At w*rk today (only 108 days to FIRE!), but saw Billy Cobham over the weekend at a small venue in Dallas. Seats center-stage, row 4. Excellent show.

Picked some cannellini beans from my garden and a couple of red jalepeños. Then swam an entire hour in my new swim spa (love it!). Made myself a breakfast fit for my birthday. DH and I shelled the beans. Half are being frozen and half are being turned into bean/tomato soup with every ingredient in it coming from my garden except some chicken broth, including the herbs.

After swimming I found I could run up and down the stairs instead of plodding. My knees really love that water workout.

We went out to dinner last night with the cast of DH's current theater production. It was so scrumptious we're counting it as my birthday dinner.

Happy Birthday EastWest Gal!

This was DR day, PCP and eyes. My PCP was impressed I'd lost 41 lbs. since April, 24 lbs. in the last 12 weeks. I was pretty shocked, knew I'd lost a lot but not that quickly. BP has been low 110/70 today but it's been much lower at home. He gave me the OK to drop off of Lisinopril and monitor my BP. We'll review my lipids next time.

Eyes were odd, vision wasn't right and lens didn't seem to help. I've worn glasses since 6 y.o. so something was wrong. Finally he asked me good news or bad first? Turns out my cataracts need to be dealt with. It would be great to not have to wear glasses again! I'm scheduled to have an evaluation in a month, funny I'm almost looking forward to it.

This weekend I did my first session as a certified barbecue judge. All I can say is it was AWESOME!

I got to judge some of the best BBQ I've ever had (well, OK, a few were just average) and hang out with some fun people (the other judges).

A lot of similarity with my other hobby as a beer judge. Now if only I could find a way to combine the two on the same day ....

Rode my bike. Then went to the dermatologist for my yearly skin checkup. All is well and the Dr. said I was medically boring. Then went to Menards to get drain tile for my drainage project, and a new bathroom vent fan. Then went for a boat ride.

That's great news about the weight loss and lower blood pressure.

Everyone I know that's had cataract surgery has had great results. My mother and grandmother had the surgery. My mother no longer needs her glasses and my grandmother only needs her glasses to read. Do look forward to it, you'll be seeing better soon!

I've watched some of the barbecue competitions on tv and was curious. I know there are different bbq recipes for different areas of the country. Do people enter all the different kinds of bbq, sweet or spicy, wet and dry. Or is it all the same kind of recipe just slightly different variations. I love bbq but like a wet, sweet, recipe. I can't take the heat.

With competitions sanctioned by KCBS, every team must enter the four main categories: chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. Aside from that requirement, they can pretty much do what they like. It's all about the meat; sauce is not important.

It is always a good day when my walk with the dog at the beach includes dolphin sightings. A pod of five dolphins was northbound when I was and we paralleled for about 1/2 a mile.

I am back in town after spending a looong Labor Day up at the high-country home. Temperature in the low desert now drops into the 90s, a bit more conducive to doing some work around the yard.

Relaxing Labor Day- son and girlfriend were here for the weekend and they headed for home after a late breakfast. Mostly hung around as it was well over 90 outside- watered the alpacas down to give them a nice break from the heat and DW found this in the barn. Must have been on the Hickory tree that is in the lot- she relocated him to another Hickory tree where he won't get trampled. Wikipedia says this is a Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar.

How about this one I caught in my backyard, coming to rescue of my wife? I don't know why she is so afraid of them, particularly they do not bite, don't move very fast so that they can jump onto her.

Are we going to see a boat or a travel trailer towed behind that truck soon?

Shrinking at the rate of one inch per ten years, you still have quite some time left. Congratulations!

Un-molded and cut the Castile soap I made on Sunday.

Trip to the big city today...
Stopped into regional big box competitor and bought a telescoping apple picking basket on sale.
Went to the pet store to get food for the critters.
DW's 6 week checkup after knee replacement, doc says she is doing exceptionally well with rehab, etc.
Had a great German meal at one of our favorite places - at lunchtime prices. ER is great!
Most expensive stop of the day was WallyMart, two months since we had restocked many of the household consumables.
Last stop was pharmacy for an Rx and some OTC stuff.
Expensive day, but this month's expenses had been trending quite favorably so far so we're good.

Cool! Never seen one like that before. I checked around, and my best guess is a Wild Cherry Sphinx Moth caterpillar. Check this out and see what you think - Sphinx drupiferarum, the Wild Cherry Sphinx.

Most of the relatively scary looking caterpillars, like that Hickory Horned Devil, are harmless. But if they are small and fuzzy looking or have long hairs sticking out, don't pick them up. Back in college I picked up a pretty little yellow caterpillar, which I now know as a Stinging Rose Caterpillar, and it stung the living crap out of me. My hand was swollen for a week, and I got nauseous and dizzy. Worse than the tarantula bite by a long shot. Such a cute little thing too.

Yes, that surely looks like it. This caterpillar is common in our back yard, and is extremely voracious. Left unchecked, it can eat an entire eggplant or a pepper plant in a couple of days.

I never want to pick up any caterpillar by hand. As a kid, I was told some could give you a hell of an itchy rash, and I certainly would not want to try that out. However, my caterpillar looks like a benign type. In fact, I happened to watch an episode of Fear Factor where contestants were supposed to eat cups of these live caterpillars. Watching it made me nauseated.

I like that one! Thanks to others for the comments and the cautions about picking up caterpillars- I usually prompt them to walk on to something with a twig rather than pick them up- sounds like the right move.
