+1 on the congratulations, Walt.

We had our big community yard sale yesterday. It was fairly sucessful. With a little rearranging we might actually be able to fit our VW Beetle into the 2 car garage now. We worked all week getting ready for it, trying to lighten our material load. For the most part it was fun, although dealing with the crazy lady who kept taking the price tags off and claiming the $15 item was just a quarter was a bit trying. We'll do another one in the fall, and hopefully get rid of almost all the rest of the stuff. Maybe a little Craiglist in the meantime.

One interesting thing was that while we were going through boxes in preparation for the sale, I found some clothes I had been missing, along with all my old neckties. Until I opened the box I didn't even know they were missing. I love being retired!

dh2b made me go shopping today...Harbor Freight, Lowes, WallyWorld...all in one day.
He had to find some special tools to do an upcoming transmission filter/fluid change and transfer case fluid change on the Jeep. We got a quote of $600 to do a very minimal j*b. In their dreams...
He is going to have to change a seal or two that appear to be leaking, plus go over everything connected with a fine toothed comb. He w*rked in a transmission shop during HS.
I was fine until we hit WallyWorld, and I uncharacteristically got very cranky. That place just does it to me.
So I went to the produce aisle while he hit the automotive section.
Plus I got a new 4 prong cultivator tool for the garden and 2 bags of Reese's PB miniatures out of the deal.
The wedding is still on...

Leon Hale column 5-17-09

Leon Hale is a three-times-a-week columnist for the Houston Chronicle. Before joining the Chronicle, he wrote for the Houston Post for about 50 years. He's old. He writes very well, in a deceptively simple, conversational style.

Readers of this thread will get a kick out of today's column, titled "Learning how to be retired, one day at a time". It begins:

Friends and customers keep asking me what I do all the time here at this old country place in Washington County.

What Iím doing, Iím trying to learn how to be retired.

After a person has worked for a living six or seven decades, quitting is difficult. To help me move into retirement, Iíve developed a schedule of daily activity that I try to follow.

This is a personal matter but a lot of young people will be retiring some day, and might want guidance, so I will print this schedule as a public service. I warn you, itís not easy.

My favorite:
Wednesday: This is the day I sit on the back porch instead of the front. I make this move because in retirement, a person should not get in a rut and do the same things over and over.

For a little while today, I pondered harley's avatar. Is that a bird and is it wearing boots? .....

Yesterday we went to our favorite neighborhood restaurant which is also a hang out for older ( and I mean older ) singles . The drinks are cheap . The food is good but the best fun is watching the pick up action. The couple sitting near us (probably real late 60's for her and early 70's for him ) were whispering sexual sweet nothings . I guess they must be dropping Viagra in the drinks since sex seems to be alive and well in that crowd .

This week is much better than last. I am so happy to have the full use and range of motion of my left arm back. It and I were out of sorts from triple vaccinations last Tuesday.
Enough whining......folded laundry today, wrapped dh2b's bday presents in xmas paper and ran out of scotch tape so I used clear package tape, played shutterbug, filled dishwasher, surfed here, caught up on some older emails.
Tough day all around.

Slept late, ran a few errands and bought stuff for DH's trip. He's taking another bike trip and will be leaving tomorrow. So, this guy will be sleeping with me for the next week or so......

I gave a massage to my massage therapist today....I was so nervous, but I got really great criticism and ways to improve.
I then got a fabulous massage from him.....had to take a three hour nap afterwards!
Made a meeting, had dinner with a friend, went to Walgreen's.
I start clinics tomorrow.....very very nervous!

Now THAT is a proper teddy bear. And I know my teddy bears...

Skipped Chinese today due to 3 lb weight gain from not exercising lately plus 49th birthday dinner (buffet!) out with dh2b.
His 49th. T Minus 1 year til I get to really harass him.
Porch floor stain is almost cured, so tomorrow is furniture re-arranging and cleaning/prepping the last section for staining.
Doing very little today...I like to have at least 1 down day per week.

Took DW on a short (45 minutes) motorcycle ride to the post office and back home the long way. She definitely does not like "helmet hair" and the bother of putting on the riding gear (boots, gloves, Kevlar padded jacket & pants) but once she's on she likes the ride.

Finally some decent weather to put the waterproofing on the back porch and deck. I'm just waiting for part to dry now so I can finish up.

Will go for another ride later on.
