Oh no!!
Dex, GET TO A DOCTOR RIGHT NOW!! Get off the computer and just go. You need medical attention. The doctor will give you more of an idea of the timeframes.
So sorry to hear this happened.

I echo what Want2 is saying. Ouch! A friend of mine broke his collar bone biking. He was so uncomfortable that he lost weight.

Yes, Dex, there is probably a walk-in injury clinic nearby. Sorry to hear about this. Some good advice here, move the rest of your body, walk.
I developed a back problem recently and one of the remedies is walking, so the more I walk the better I'm getting; in a few weeks I went from short walks with a cane to being almost normal, that is, as normal as I can get taking two additive drugs.

I dislocated a shoulder once. Too keep active I rode an exercycle at the gym (a recumbent version). Also if you could walk or do the stairstepper or elliptical before your shoulder problem, you still can afterwards.
Get thee to a doctor, sir. Get patched up so you can begin healing. It may not be as bad as you think, anyway, but you won't know until you're evaluated.
This year a guy rode the Fireweed 400 this year (the 200 miles Sheep Mtn to Valdez) on a recumbent bike rather than a normal bike, because his collarbone was broken.

Dex, I can see this is not your "first rodeo" with shoulder injuries. Still, we value you enough that we are worried and concerned, and hope you can get someone to look at it soon. Tonight, maybe?

Well true, but anybody would need help with a broken shoulder (even Chuck Norris! ). An x-ray can help in telling if there is anything unusually dangerous about the break that you don't yet know about.
Besides, even a rough tough guy like you might like some pain meds later on tonight.

Since you've already been thru a broken arm you must have an orthopedic doctor . Give them a call & they will probably meet you at an emergency room . There is no cast for shoulder problems . The shoulder is placed in a immobilizer . It is a sling with an extra piece to keep the arm stable. Good Luck ! Maybe it's not broken !

I strained my shoulder doing some very mild weight-lifting a few months ago. It was surprising how such a tiny injury could cause so much pain. The real problem was sleeping. I finally figured out how to use pillows to get semi-comfortable, but I never found a way to get completely comfortable. It took me over 2 months to get back to normal. From now on, I'll be more cautious. I hope that you can work something out!

You hit it right on the head! For us weekend warriors with real jobs, an injury can mean many nights of bad sleep and, therefore, bad performance at work. It's not easy to live life to the max if you have a day job. Hence, I think Mr. Greenspun is wrong in stating that most people don't live their lives to the maximum because they "think" that their jobs are holding them back. Trust me, you job does hold you back.
Dex, are you sure you broke your shoulder? Is that your assessment or a doctor's assessment? I did a flying summersault over a traffic cone, landed on my right shoulder, and then still managed to hit the ground hard enough to crack my helmet. At the time, I certainly felt as if I had broken something, but it turned out to be a bone bruise. Another time, a 250 lb. guy did a side kick to my thigh as I was in mid air try to kick him, and I thought I had broken my leg, but it turned to be a bone bruise as well. In both cases, I couldn't move for 2 weeks, but no broken bones!

I broke my shoulder 3 years ago - skiing. I got very lucky the bones were lined up - so they just velcroed my arm to my chest and let it heal - no surgery. It was an "electrical" type of pain anytime my arm/shoulder muscles tryed to move the shoulder when sleeping.
Sorry you got injured - hopefully there will be no need for surgery - take care of yourself!

Same here. Slight tear in the rotator cuff doing bench press. Excruciating pain. Took me 18 months and some PT before I was back to 100%. About a year before I wasn't wincing every day. I recommend doing the right things to take care of it. Although if you're still young(er than me) you'll probably heal faster than I did. Definitely healing slower in my advancing years.

Had broken collarbone on dominant hand side, after 3 months was nearly ambidexterous. This was some years ago.
The time spent learning to do everything lefty, was frustrating at first but got fun with increasing ability.
So: try learning to shave with a straight razor left handed . Though I had some advantage: When my first fuzzy whiskers showed up, as a teen, I only had my late father's straight razor to practice with.
I also built a carport even though my right hand was in a sling. Left handed, it was already started, the posts having been up. But did all the rest of the roof framing with one hand and teeth, chin, whatever to hold things in place.
DW thought I was nuts, but was amazed the tenacity. I did everything to avoid TV drivel, or moping about. I just remembered my years in the Alaskan bush where absolute self reliance is what keeps you alaive when poop hits the fan.
So I'd say do everything as before, just do it one handed.
A neighbor of mine long ago, was digging fence post holes and putting in posts. He was a double amputee, two nubs for legs. He could even hop on his hands into the back of his Ford ranger pickup truck to get tools in and out.
Have at it.
