Made a heart shaped box from oak,with a music movement. It plays “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”.

Very nice boxes, Dave! How many passes does the CNC make to hog out the inside of the boxes?

In general terms, I usually start at cutting about half the diameter of the bit on each pass but a lot of variables related to wood and cutter speed. The cedar cuts like butter, could hardly even hear the bit removing wood, the oak much slower.

Having said that, the boxes were each made from one board, 6” x 18” x 7/8” and three hearts are cut with variation in each. The first heart is the lid so has the 3D heart shape and text on the top and a dado on the bottom around the edge to fit in the finished box.

The next heart is upper portion of the box body so cuts are made completely through the wood in the heart shape separated by the width of the box wall. Then a dado is cut in the top to accept the lid. Picture below is the piece that was cut out of the middle heart when I cut it with a laser engraving.

The third heart is the only one that actually has material hogged out, and then only 1/4” deep to make the bottom of the pocket. Then a perimeter cut in the shape of the heart. This piece also gets an area hogged out on the bottom to allow the winding handle from the music box to be turned.

The two pieces that make up the heart box are glued together and then all three pieces are held together in the box shape and sanded to make sure it all matches up.

At the risk of over explaining, here are a couple of preview shots from the design software that I used to make the box. It's called Vectric Aspire and is geared to CNC design. These show exactly what the cuts will look like when you run them, saves a lot of material to experiment in the software before committing to wood!

Some very beautiful work in here!

I have a modest woodshop and enjoy making things for our house. Most recent is this mirror frame for behind our basement bar. Each "tile" is individual and had to be made and glued on separately...hundreds of tiles in Ash and Mahogany.

First combo project with the wine butler made on the CNC machine and then used the same rose as an etching on the wine glasses to go with it. Will do a couple of things differently next time but happy with how it turned out. Will take it up to the artist co-op for sale, wanted something appropriate for Valentines Day without adding any text to be too obvious. Wood is cedar like the heart shaped box I posted earlier.

lawrencewendall, The lanterns are really nice. What are the dimensions? Is that a handle on the top?

I modified this a little. The base is 6 1/2 x 6 1/2. The body is 6 x 6 and the top is 7 x 7. Total height is 14.5, not counting the handle. I made the top a little bigger to accommodate the Ikea drawer handle as the top handle. The idea came from here:
