My job does not offer a 401k, but in a couple a years when my wife starts working and her employer offers a 401k, can i open one via her job, or do I need to fina an employer to sponser me?

401ks are made available to employees by employers. As such your wife could open one with her employer, but you would not be able to open one of your own with her employer (unless you were also their employee).

If you have self-employment income, you could open your own solo-401k, but contributions would be limited based upon your profits.
