Our last lunch break was in the desert. This one is in the mountains. I didn't make it to the top of any mountains. I wasn't properly equipped; maybe tomorrow.
I'm still a bit overweight but I think this hiking will take care of that.
It was a bit cool in the morning when I started but it warmed up.

With global warming you might want to speed up that ER timeline if you want to see these vistas.

Dex, you've got the nicest cafe in town...um, well, out of town...

You may want to get your tiny head looked at by a doctor.

So, you notice that too?

Well, see the highlight I made below. Perhaps his coat also made his body larger. Also, I remember in a previous post Dex said he shaved his head. My head would also be smaller without its full cover of hair.

Thanks Westernskies

RE: head - snow + cold = heavy clothing
Think about it.

Westernskies has proved time and time again that conservatives also have a sense of humour.

I don't know why I posted that. It implies that conservatives are usually humorless, which of course is not true. ;)

About accusations, I think of myself as an independent, or at least a moderate. Yet, my wife and I are viewed as "conservatives" by our extended family. Just because we happen to be to their right?

My close friend, a card-carrying Libertarian, has the same experience. He said that in political discussions with his "ultra-liberal" sisters (his word), he often ended up defending G.W. Bush, whom he hated - this last statement I could attest to.

Anyway, whichever your political inclination, it is tough to maintain a sense of humour when one is busy foaming at the mouth. I hated it when it happened to me a few times. :D

I know exactly what you're talking about, I'm an extreme libertarian some might even label me an anarchist. But I've had many conversations where I end up defending republican views against socialist who think I'm a conservative. The only way to disabuse them of that thought is to then mention how heroin should be legal and that they are bigoted for supporting marriage of gays by the state and opposing polygamous marriages when the state shouldn't be involved in marriage at all.

I know little about the libertarian platform, but I understand that they are in favor of "open borders". True? What exactly is that and how would it work?

Mods, if this is against the political post rules, just delete it with my apologies.

Platform | Libertarian Party

Well, this is what they say about it. As to how it would actually "work" (be implemented), and how it would "work" (results), I have not the foggiest:

3.4 Free Trade and Migration

We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a threat to security, health or property.

Open borders is sort of a last priority as it would take the dismantlement of all entitlement program, withdraw and decommissioning of all military bases and conflicts outside of our borders, and dismantle ment of the DEA and ATF first for it to be feasible.

It would turn immigration into what it used to be prior to the New Deal. Coming to America wouldn't be giving you free education or health or foodstamps or anything else. Entrepreneurs would want to travel here or if we had a labor shortage people would move here.

Why do we have closed borders? Right now it's just to prevent immigrants who don't pay taxes from putting their kids in our schools and using our hospitals and other services they don't contribute to. Or to keep out all of the contraband stuff we want kept out. If there was nothing free for just showing up the only reason to move here would be for the opportunity to make something of yourself. If there was nothing contraband then what would you be searching people at the border for?

Hey - this is my thread!

Hey - this is my thread!

OK, so what do you want to talk about - pay off the mortgage?, buy an annuity? - your choice! ;)

Seriously, sorry for the interruption, I am totally enjoying your thread on hiking. Keep the pics and documentary going. I'm probably not physically fit enough to attempt what you are doing, so I'm enjoying the view, and am a bit envious.

We had warm temps today here in IL, I'm *almost* missing that snow already - my back and knees and schedule kept me from any cross country skiing this past year, so this is as close as I can get.

Enjoy - ERD50
