We were in Hawaii last week and whilst we were at the airport waiting for our return flight we got talking to a gentleman who was waiting for his flight to Seattle.

He told us he bought a property on the Big Island 8 years ago as he and his wife were going to spend 6 mons in Seattle and 6 mos on the Big Island each year when they retired. They retired 6 years ago. However, they have decided to sell their Big Island home because they find it just too quiet there. The lack of cultural events is what is driving them out.

However what is probably more relevant to this discussion is he told us he has had his property on the market for 6 months without an offer and hardly any viewings. I am not sure of the details of his property, but I figure it does involve a fair bit of land because he mentioned that he had cattle.

So to the originator of this thread it is possible that real estate on the Big Island is actually not going anywhere at this moment, so depending on your financial situation it might be worth sitting tight.

Nords, thanks for that tip on HawaiiThreads. I actually subscribed as we are thinking of relocating to Oahu later this year. At this time it is only an idea, we know all the negatives, but the thought of being out on the water for most of the year is very appealing. It's just too cold here in So. California.

Honolulu has theater & symphony & comedy clubs and great musicians, but it ain't Manhattan. It's not even Des Moines...

In general I avoid attending any cultural event that requires wearing socks, let alone a tie or a jacket. But Hawaii is a cultural mecca for surfing or hula or anthropology or nature or just the general outdoor life.

Hawaiian music has its own category in the Grammys now, and the entertainment in the bars & nightclubs is top-notch. Many local musicians are every bit as good as Mainland entertainers but choose to stay here with family, friends, & climate. Instrumentalists like Jake Shimabukuro or singers like the Na Leo Pilimehana just don't translate well to pop music. In fact Glen Medeiros was a 1980s pop star and now teaches at St. Louis school while performing nights in a luau.

Let me know how that works out-- I think it's one of the best ways to ease the transition. You also might find an expat on that board who's living near you and can offer tips on making the move.

The harshest part of our winter is passing. Daytime highs are back up in the mid-80s and the water temps have risen to 78-80 degrees!
