New venture
So DH and I are doing well on our saving, and would probably be 4 years from FIRE, but I can't stand my job any more. I've been here 19 years, but moving into a new group 2 years ago has made me miserable. I did a few months off with disability to deal with my depression and anxiety, tried to come back to full time, but was still calling in sick at least once a week. Am on part time disability now, so I'm only working 20 hours per week, and while I can be effective while I'm here, I still hate it.
About 6 months ago I went through the What Color is your Parachute book. In a lot of ways I thought it was pretty dumb, and told me what I already knew, but it did make me realize why my current job was so bad for me.
I've had an idea for a small business for quite a while, and with recent state law changes, it led to a new market being available for this product I was considering. I started in mid-Sept looking into things, making some samples, getting some feedback. I got some really good feedback, so started getting licenses and permits in October, and some promises for retail outlets. Got my final permit on 12/18. I just delivered my 10th-13th locations yesterday.
This has been super fun for me, lots of excitement, and a bit of hard work.
DH is unhappy in his job as well, and nervous about giving up our awesome benefits though my work, and giving up my income.
I'm currently thinking about an end date at megacorp at the end of March/April 1st. The 401k matching is tiered, so the first $3500 I put in is matched at 100%, so I'm hoping to get that.
I know my business probably won't make much for a year or two, then I'm hoping for 3-5 good years of a much more fun w*rk experience before I hang it up for good, or keep going because I actually enjoy it.
I'm having a ton of mixed emotions, scared that the company won't make it, scared of quitting a 19 year job, excited about running my own company, etc.
Would love any feedback, words of wisdom, or whatever.
*sorry for the vagueness of what my company will be, don't want to promote it here, but would be happy to share if you PM me. It is food related in San Diego.
