I was an infantry advisor to the Vietnamese army in the late 60s and they used this technique on just about every mission that we went on (over 100) and it was a very effective way to quickly obtain intelligence. Neither me, nor my fellow Americans, participated in it, but we surely appreciated it's results. Most sessions lasted less than 30 seconds.
We never called it water boarding, in fact, I do not recall if there was ever a name for it at that time. It was just referred to as "that water deal" that they did.
