Computer Crashes Often on ER site

My laptop has a tendency to get stuck on the ER site. I don't know if it's a matter of processing speed, memory, or other issue. (My computer has a processor speed of 2.3 Ghz and 4 MB of RAM).

When it happens, I sometimes get a popup box indicating that a script has stopped running, and am offered a couple of options, basically to try running the script again, or to stop running the script. Either way, the page usually stops working. I usually end up closing out that instance of the browser and starting over.

I've had Geeksquad review the matter several times, without a permanent answer having been found. The last time, I was told (while getting online help from G-squad) that it was a hardware issue. But, I haven't yet had a chance to bring my computer into Best Buy to address the matter.

If anyone else has experienced this issue and knows of a setting or configuration change that would help with this issue, it would be very helpful.

Which browser are you using? Try using another browser if possible. Also try clearing the browsing data.

It is probably scripts. I am using a relatively new laptop with 6GB memory and I still have serious problems these days with websites running bad javascript. Firefox has an add on that lets you toggle disable javascript. It will remove some functionality from things like this posting box but should speed up your browsing experience 1000%.

Any information about the script involved? This will help you search for the cause.

Browser, computer OS, and router all have cached information. Empty all, and try your browser again. Try other browsers or apps also.

Most of the time, these are scripts running on an ad, after all they have to catch your attention, and this is why since we are all served ads geared to our own browsing history that many other folks have no issue on the same site. Because they don't get the ads you get.

Try running firefox browser with an ad blocker, I ran Adguard AdBlocker and was amazed at al the ads it stopped. It is very well rated.

Menu item Tools -> Add Ons -> then search for it

The main cause is probably the 4MB of RAM. With that little RAM Windows has to spend a lot of time thrashing to move things back and forth from the HD and RAM. Especially on complex pages. If you can upgrade to 8MB it would help a lot.

Thanks for this. My computer would hang or freeze on certain sites i.e. this one, ebay etc..) With Adguard AdBlocker, so far so good.

thanks i occasionally have this problem on this site but much more on other sites, this seems to have helped

Might even jump from 4MB to 4GB, should see a vast improvement.

It's this site and all the ads and scripts. Constantly freezes crashes when using Firefox. Same thing happens with Motley Fool and its bloated site. I have plenty of RAM. I know this forum is free and I really enjoy visiting it, but the site performance had always been abysmal.

Try the ad blocker, you will be amazed. Un-install it if you feel you are missing too many ads.

i'm running on a nearly 8 year old MacBook and have no machine specific problems with the ER site. Or any other site for that matter. The only issue I have is that the old machine just runs slower than newer ones. No surprise there.

I have found that some of the add-ons I have installed on FireFox or Chrome do interfere with certain websites, sometimes in unexpected ways. When a website is misbehaving the first thing I do is try it out on my Safari browser which has had nothing added to it. Usually that 'fixes' the problem.
