Get rid of dryer sheet reference

One more thing - I who am normally a cheap SOB - bought Pac NW mountain scene in Callam Bay WA made by a 90 yr old from - drum roll please - recycled dryer lint.

heh heh heh - After that vacation - I who never read books actually read The Little Book of Common Sense Investing. We need to refresh some of the old traditions -lest I fall apart completely. :D

Unclemick - good to hear from you...heh heh heh :D :flowers:

About a week or so ago he was near Seattle and called me. I think he was driving back home after that, but he may have had some other traveling planned. I think I remember him saying that he didn't have internet access with him. I hope everything is well with him.

Ha

Uncle Mick is obviously still kicking. I would have guessed he's still soaking in the Sol Duc natural hot springs. Hi there! :greetings10:

Umm... I notice CuppaJoe has also been missing.

Hey, this is like old home week and people are worried about dryer sheets, stop it.

Yes- let's hope some mod knows where she is, or that she will check in. I thought of her this afternoon while fixing dinner because I am going to an opera tonight, and I know that she is a big opera fan.

What are you seeing Ha? I love opera. When I worked in NYC, the young wife and I had a subscription to the Met. I believe Martha is also an opera fan.

Last I heard from CuppaJoe she was fine, but busy. I expect she will check in soon.

Why would it be "ridiculous" to ask if there's an option to turn off or change the description in someone's profile?

What is actually ridiculous is the lousy job the moderators of the forum have done in this thread, which is full of personal attacks and nastiness.

Easy to slam the mods, try being one (which I was), it isn't as easy as it seems.......

CFB Great to hear from you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unclemick Great to hear from you!!!!!!!!
Hope to hear more from you both.
I was just discussing with my teenage son how funny life can be, things you think are bad for you often turn out really good.
Having OP post uh not so good. Hearing from old friends very good:) (emoticom nords almost posted)

Thanks for the info re CJ, Gumby. Cool that you had season tickets to the Met!

Lucia di Lammermoor is what we saw. I could not sit back in my seat the entire time, I was pole-axed by the intensity of the performances. I had never before seen a Donizetti opera.

Something I noticed and I don't remember noticing before is that much of the music is in waltz time. It was interesting seeing lives come apart on stage, accompanied by waltzes! I have been too cheap to go to many performances for some years now, but I think I would like to get back to going as I enjoyed it very much.

Ha

You're right about that, FD. I've been an administrator of a busy politics forum for years, and I've seen all kinds of moderators come and go.

In our forum and in most other decent forums on the Web, personal attacks are not allowed. A good team of moderators stops a thread from being destroyed by personal attacks even if the attacks come from older members. Lousy moderators are afraid to rock the boat with those older members and the result is never good. The majority of new active members start out as lurkers, and when they see negativity and personal attacks being allowed by the moderators, they hesitate to participate in the future.

It's fine for any forum not to welcome suggestions about its functionality. I have no problem with that. Just tell people that suggestions are not welcome and call it a day.

In general, I'd say that this is one of the better forums and the moderators seems to do a mostly good job, but there needs to be consistency in stopping personal attacks.

And some people need to understand that not everyone is a big fan of the dryer sheet theme or the concept of extreme frugal retirement. :)

It's all in good, clean fun, you know. Some of us crusty veterans have had these same discussions ad nauseum, so threads such as these take a detour pretty early on...

Just have a bacon sandwich, put a pancake on your head, and give a hearty "heh heh", and it'll all be good...

CaseInPoint, is it just that you don't see the humor (and extreme irony for most of our members) in the dryer sheets ratings? Do you not think the owner/founding members (of whom I am not one) are allowed to have a little fun with their enterprise? I'm not really sure (not as a moderator) what you find so bothersome about it.

Ah, looks like we need to model our behavior as mods after those other, better mods that exist on other forums. Dang, I knew I should have gone to mod college so we could be a "decent" forum!

Yeah, the better forums only allow BSmod's to be moderators. (hmm, that didn't quite come out as intended)

Dear Case in Point:

After careful consideration of your suggestion, we decline. If you care to find out whether the moderators are indeed timid, you are free to contact us directly by PM. You could start with me.

I think and assert that this is a decent forum.

Maybe a bit on the catty side on occasion, yet in good jest.

At times some, including myself do get carried away, and get moderated. Heck, at least one thread fully disappeared.

...most other decent forums

Houston, we've found the problem...

Granted, there are plenty of folks on this forum who will never have to give thought to the cost of dryer sheets, but the point still stands: FIRE is possible, even for those of modest means, or even those who have brazillions of dollars, but can't pull the trigger for lack of good role models, i.e. people who have been there/done that.

Btw, I don't use any stinkin' dryer sheets!

I am seeing "Lucia" for the first time on Nov. 21 but I have been listening to a CD from a performance starring Joan Sutherland at the Royal Opera House 50 years ago for the last several days. I am an opera novice but have been enjoying attending in Pittsburgh the last couple of years.

Oh, and definitely keep the cache of the dryer sheets. And HFWR, I don't use them either but I agree it is the concept of small things adding up to big things that matter.

Gumby:

I wish you, Ha, Martha or another forum member would do an opera thread. I love music of all kinds, including opera, but don't know enough about it to start a thread. I do know opera has been some of the most incredible and beautiful music I've ever heard. I'd like to hear and learn more.
