I still like the idea of a neutron bomb: add everybody to your ignore list, and then you can play by yourself in this ghost town. :)

Oh wait, CFB sort of did that already, didn't he.

So what does adding a poster to my buddy list do?

Is the list just a favorites-poster list, or do I get automatically notified when a "buddy" posts something?

Hmmm...methinks I am on the Ignore Lists of all of you  but it's OK 'cause I found an older thread that talks about the Buddy List:

http://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f32/buddy-list-28076.html#post523042

I haven't put any poster in my Ignore List yet. I can skip, skim, scan posts on my own.

Don't threads seem disjointed when you can't see stuff posted by your ignored posters, especially if they are prodigious posters with a post in almost every thread?

On the other hand, a lot of our threads zigzag around the original topic, so not seeing some posts may not make much difference. And one can see posts by ignorees when they are quoted by non-ignored posters.

Maybe we need a better analogy.

I don't enjoy stepping in pet feces (especially in a climate where I'm usually barefoot). If I knew that there wasn't any on the ground where I walk, then I wouldn't have to keep an eye out for those unpleasant surprises. You can't ignore them because they ruin your day and can ruin the days of others.

I don't like seeing litter on the streets of our neighborhood. I don't spend my days chasing around with a broom and a trash can, but if I see a piece of litter blowing around then I'll pick it up and throw it in the trash. It makes me feel good to do a little bit toward cleaning things up and making a more pleasant environment. I wasn't responsible for creating the problem but I helped fix it.

I know I could ignore posts by objectionable posters. (Remember the "Asian male porn" spammer?) But they make me grumpy and they litter the board.

I suggest that you try it. Put someone on your ignore list and see how the board experience changes for you. You can always take them off the ignore list again.

But I suspect that you won't miss anything, any more than you "miss" the inital post of a spammer who was banned before you got on the board that morning, or any more than we "miss" H0cus. Maybe once in a while you'll be curious about something the ignoree said and you'll click on the "View Post" button that's on the upper right of their post (or some other poster will quote it). But after two or three of those you realize that's why you put them on the ignore list in the first place.

It makes the board a faster read, I don't feel grumpy from trying to dodge all the obstacles or pick up all the litter, and I don't have to endure unpleasant people. Sounds a lot like the reasons I ER'd in the first place...

Exactly.

The second time a poster makes me want to write a long invective-filled post in response to something particularly inane, I click the ignore button.

Too bad I couldn't do that at the office.

Heh heh was at the gun range with my neighbor and as I put my ear plugs in it was really noticeable how much calmer I suddenly felt. I looked at him and said "I wonder if they'll let me wear these at work?"

Funny thought. Ignore is kinda like a mute button on the remote. :2funny:

Unfortunately, there is not an ignore category option. Even within a specific forum there is a broad number of topics. If threads within a forum could be sub-categorized, I could weed out topics that did not interest me.

IMO the ignore button is more the reader's preference. If they (for what ever reason) choose to filter out certain peoples posts. That is their choice.

What get's under my skin is when they point out the person and make it public. Then it is no longer a personal choice, but instead a public criticism. If someone chooses to ignore posters... then hopefully they do it on both sides of the equation.

I voted 0 and ignore no posts using that option. But I do skip past certain things that are of little interest to me.

:)

Well, CFB hasn't voted yet.

For reasons explained in my post I felt my appropriate number was "5", but it's a moving target.

I can't change my vote, but feel free to update it to "6" to reflect my later edit!

What the heck happened to CFB. I haven't seen many posts from him lately.

Now I am getting paranoid. Who have I p!$$ed off. There isn't a Reverse Ignore Feature is there? The kind where some choose to not share their comments with certain people. :D

Or possible the Ultimate Ignore Feature (also known as the garbage can), all of your posts only show up for you and nobody else. That would be a cruel joke wouldn't it.

When the board is making him grumpy he takes a break. He might be back, or he might not. You could send him a PM for more locator info.

It's been discussed-- two boards, one of them the real board and another one the backup that a particularly troublesome poster might be directed to. They could post to their heart's content but no one would ever respond...

Interesting to note that some people leave the board because they got "grumpy" and took a break. And others leave because they can't take the heat so they took their ball and went home.

Never realized that the leaving poster's reason was an easy thing to determine.

I am not a 'slashie' or a 'dottie' or whatever a regular there would call themselves, but I could have sworn that Slashdot (or maybe it was one of the other tech blogs) had just such a set up -- it would show the posts back to a submitter based on matching their cookie, but those posts might not ever be visible to anyone else, based on poster's status.

The Retire Early Home Page - him and SG occasionally zing the H man(he who was banned)

I know cause I lurk. I have my bad to bone quirks over which I 'try' to keep a grip.

I have a really bad habit of reading the headlines of the Tabloids in the checkout lines at Wal Mart and the supermarket.

Never pick them up to read or buy any though!

Too obvious.

Hey OAP, glad to see you back. And remember, always bring along your avatar when you visit. :)

Ha

Ha,
I'm working for the DNP here in NYC and they've promised me an avatar of Hillary wearing the same outfit. And for my new young Asian girlfriend, an avatar of Bill's nose. She loves it. NO, not Bill's nose. She loves IT.

Otherwise, I'm reformed and will never vote again.
