I've been seeing lousy connectivity to this site for a while now, and I know it's not me because I occasionally get a 500 error.
It'd be nice to see some sort of status message if you guys are aware of the problem and are working on it. If you're not aware of the problem, check your logs -- you should be able to see the connection errors.

We do have a monitoring system in place to load pages every so often and if a 500 error is found it corrects things but obviously something is not working. I asked the server admins to investigate this last night. They were not able to find any specific errors but did restart the web servers.
In the future please try accessing the site via the two primary web servers. You can do this by adding a 1 or 2 after the www in the URL. That will help me understand which web server is causing the errors. Here are links: www1.early-retirement.org/forums/ <-- Web Server #1 www2.early-retirement.org/forums/ <-- Web Server #2 |

Andy, you could actively monitor the web logs and graph 500's over time, or do some active notification if more than X of them occur in a 5 minute period, etc. Every webserver I've ever dealt with logs the status code for each request; reacting to logged 500's can sometimes be more useful than monitoring whether your own simulated requests get that as a response.
BTW, I'm not up on what software you run, but Apache 1.99-beta is a rather odd version for the server to be giving out as a server token. |

Edit: it just happened again, and both www1 and www2 weren't responding. So, my first test may have just been a timing quirk. Maybe your host is periodically unreachable. Were they doing router maintenance today? Last edited by twaddle; 12-07-2007 at 04:10 PM. |

The load balancer checks each server every few seconds and if one server is not responding it will stop sending traffic to it. If this happens again record the exact time and we can check into the server logs and see what is happening.
On a side note, there were some network issues last night for a little while. It was something inside the datacenter that was causing the issue. |

Problem With Safari Browser
When I go to the pull down menu to mark the threads as read nothing happens. This started a few days ago. At work with Firefox it works like normal, just can't mark anything as read while at home. Interesting. I've had worse problems but it does get irritating. Doesn't happen on any other site.

Hmm... see if there have been updates or changes to your browser. If you have this problem on one system but not another, chances are there has been a change to one computer.
Start by deleting all your temp files and saved cookies. Restart your computer and see it that fixes it.

Have your bribed a moderator today
![]() I'm not sure why you are having this trouble and I can't recreate this problem. So - here's what i suggest: Delete your temp internet files and cookies and then try again. You will have to log in again after you do this. Be sure to click the 'remember me" box when you log in. If you are using IE: >Tools >Internet options >general security tab >delete cookies >delete Files Hit OK. If this doesn't work - we'll try something else.

Quirky cursor behavior when opening a thread...When I open a thread, my cursor will, after a one or two second pause, go to the bottom of the page and come to rest in the "quick reply>Message" box. I have to select an area outside of the the message box to page up or home back to the top. Windows XP/IE7. Anyone else experience this/found a fix?
Thanks, dc |

This might be the "jump to last post" feature where the browser jumps to what is called an Anchor in HTML. It requires the page to be fully rendered so if you are somewhere else on the page it will seem to jump to the anchor when the page finishes loading.

I forgot my password and have been unable to get my password reset under my original user name, so I created this secondary username to contact you for assistance. i have requested the password reset, but when I go to the link emailed to me to secure the reset password, I never receive the next email with the new password. I have tried this numerous times over the past week. I would like to go back to using my original user id and email if possible. Can you help? Thanks. -AJ Thanks. |

Please try again - be sure that your image matched the size requirements specified on the upload screen. Holler if it doesn't work again.

Hey, I noted a bit of a problem on the site after I downloaded Firefox 3.0 yesterday, and some others noted it on a thread (Firefox 3.0) as well. Any admin looking at this?
It seems that the pages hang up and show as "stopped" in the lower corner. If I go back to my original bookmark, or R.Wood says if he hits the back arrow, it works again. An intermittent problem, but one I thought you might want to know about. Thanks!
