Financially Independent Retire Early. It's basically the goal of everyone on this forum. FI gives you the option to RE if you choose.

You'll find lots of subtleties when you read the posts... people use just FI for financial independence, ER and RE tend to be interchangable... Then there's SIRE - for those without the big savings but with nice pensions (secure income retired early)...
