Firecalc asks for annual spending.
Is this after tax spending?
... or is it assuming this is the gross withdrawals from your assets each year?

The term "spending" to me means the actual amount you spend each year as a consumer. This is also after tax money. Your asset withdrawals would have to be bigger to account for taxes.

FIRECalc assumes gross spending, including taxes.

Taxes are so individual that it doesn't make sense to try to model them in an app like Firecalc. It makes more sense for users to estimate their own taxes and add them in like any other anticipated spending in retirement.

Int his regard, I like The Flexible Retirement Planner better. It allows you to enter expenses sans taxes and then customize your taxes. This is nice for different stages of withdrawal.
