From the article:

In April 2007, a British study also found that the 50-plus set benefited from a supportive environment of their peers when exercising -- and that without one, they'd rather work out alone than with bunch of Spandex-clad 20-somethings.

I enjoy watching the spandex clad ladies at my gym. I stopped by an abs class the other day and was the only male in the room.

I'd like to take a close look at that study!

Good article - thanks for posting. The book "younger next year" is a big promoter of aerobic exercise and goes into quite a bit of scientific detail of how and why this works to keep up your quality of life up well into old age, although it doesn't quote any studies saying it will extend life as much as 12 years.
I've also been reading a book called "Where Did I Leave My Glasses" on memory loss and research shows that the best thing to keep your brain healthy and spry is guess what? "Aerobic exercise and weight training" - better blood flow, certain chemicals created through exercise and reduction of a sort of plaque on the neurons similar to a plaque build up in arteries. So, another reason to hit that treadmill and pump that iron

That is what DW tells me. We walk about 7 miles a day. Two trips. I figure we spend about 2+ hours a day walking. So each year we are walking about the equivalent of 30 days and we have been doing this for about 20 years so if I can live two years longer and not lose my marbles it is just about a wash.

Except that you likely don't consider the time spent walking to be time wasted. The walks are probably enjoyable for both of you.

They are and early on they were "time to talk away from the kids". Very valuable as well as enjoyable.
