Many reports say that Spain has one of the best public medical and health services. The problem is that they are crowded given that the system has a universal coverage and, as a result, you can wait for hours, say 4/6, in the ER room till a doctor sees you.

Sounds like I'm not the only one who was refused ER coverage the first time around, then granted on appeal. The ambulance took me to the ER of a hospital that is not a participating provider for my Anthem insurance, so I would have had to pay about half the ER bill, more than my discretionary spending for a year.

I just heard that Anthem responded to the grievance I filed by saying they will cover it at participating rates, which should be 100%... glad I stuck that out. Their first inclination seems to always be "coverage denied" and it's up to the consumer to fight for what they are entitled to.

I now know the list of participating provider ERs near me by heart.
