Arthritis Question

I got my 66-year-old sister a mountain bike, and she's quite excited about it. She says, however, that because of some arthritis in her hands, and it hurts to brake when going on a long downhill.

My guess is that this will get better as her hands get stronger. But how does it work with arthritis -- it gets worse the more you use the joint, yes?

If it's osteoarthritis, it may get worse with use. It would be wise to check out larger grips, and anything else that would widen the grip on the brake handles and bars.

Sometimes a preventive dose of ibuprofen before such use can make a big difference.
