My brother nearly died from meningococcal meningitis as I described above. I was only a baby/toddler at the time, and this was about 60 years ago, but from what my parents said the recovery took a few months. It is probably faster now with all the advances in medicine since that time.

This is probably no help at all! But just wanted to respond since I had posted about it above.

I only had viral meningitis and was extremely fortunate, not nearly as sick as your son but it still took me a month to recover. The difficulty I had walking was because of extreme dizziness but I was able to shuffle about trying to stop the world from going round and to minimize the pain in my head my moving as slowly as possible.

The headaches and dizziness took the longest time to go away. I was asked if I minded taking rectal tablets to stop the vomiting and said "no problem" and they worked very well indeed.

My advice is to be patient and follow doc's orders.

In 1983 while a medical student on pediatrics, a 5 year old was flown in from a small town to our teaching hospital unconsicous and on a ventilator. He has normal 24 hours before and was, despite treatment, dead within 2 days...of haemophilus influenzae B meningitis. H. influenza b meningitis is a bacterium. A vaccine exists now for this disease (Hib). Since routine vaccination has occurred, the incidence of this devastating disease has nosedived.
I have not forgotten the image of his weeping mother standing by his bed before the ventilator was turned off because he was brain dead.

I wanted to post just a small update concerning my son's recovery process. I took him to the doctor yesterday for his first follow up visit. The doctor thinks he is making a "remarkable" recovery. She said that his white blood cell count was one of the highest that she had ever seen on the day that he was admitted to the hospital and that he had a very strong immune system working for him. That helped him get thru this much better than some would have.

He is still taking antibiotic treatments thru a pic line three times a day, but they have omitted the antibiotic pills that were making him feel horrible. His mood has greatly improved with the illimination of those pills!

He is walking normally and the weakness in his arm and hand are almost gone. He is exercising that hand some each day with a squeeze ball and weights. He says his vision is effected some, but the doctor seems to think that too will clear up.

The doctor thinks he will be off work for at least six weeks and then should be able to continue with his normal life.

Thanks so much for prayers and words of support from everyone.

Your story brought back memories of my own experience. My son had viral meningitis when he was 16 years old. We live in Georgia and he was in football camp in Florida when he came down with it. He was in the hospital for three weeks and on the verge of death for days. This left him with aphasia (an inability to talk or write). It took about four years and much speech therapy, but today he is 35 years old and if you didn't know it you wouldn't be able to pick up on any problem. On occasion he just has a little difficulty recalling some words. He graduated from high school on time and also got a college degree. He is married with two daughters and is a commercial real estate appraiser. It sounds like your son should fully recover soon based on his progress so far.
