brain wave technology

What are the views on brain wave technology: those cd's and mp3 tecnologies that supposedly cause entrainment of brain waves so as to produce altered states such as delta (deep sleep), alpha (awake but relaxed), and beta (wakeful awareness)? They are available and purportedly tailored to inducing sleep, meditative states and creative mode. Do they work? Or is it bogus?
