Eye Floater Removal Surgery (Removal) Anyone had it?

Madsquopper-I went to that site and watched the video on the laser procedure. He sure did get rid of the rooster. Cool!

I had floaters in both eyes due to posterior vitreous detachments after cataract surgery (it's not clear if the surgery actually caused the PVD's but it does increase the risk). Anyway, it left me with some very annoying floaters, mostly Weiss rings in both eyes. After a year of online research plus input from my ophthalmologist (who said don't do it) and my retina doctor (said it's unlikely to make things worse and could make things better but no guarantee) I decided to do the laser method.

At the time there were basically 3 recommended doctors doing this and one was in my area so ended up having him treat both eyes. At least for me the results were incredibly good and I've had no further problems or any new floaters. Mine were the type that supposedly were the easiest to treat. Based on all I read it's impossible to predict beforehand exactly how good the results will be, but at least most of the people said it helped at least somewhat.

Here's the place I went to https://www.eyefloaters.com/ and it has a lot of good, general info.

Larry

Interesting, my floater is also due to Weiss ring, but I was told if you laser that it can create dozens of smaller floaters that can be even more bothersome.

Well, I have my Vitrectomy & Retinal "Peel" Scheduled. If all goes well it will be done on the 23rd of October. Seems I have to do a lot of other stuff to get done first. 1) Laser Film off IOL (Cataract Replacement Lens) 2) Get a Pre-Op Physical 3) EKG, 4) Pacemaker test. No wonder Healthcare is so expensive, I only just had an EKG and Pacer Check 6 Months ago.

Bang goes the Canada trip I had previously scheduled for October.

OK I promised an Update, Today is Day 1. I had the Surgery today at 9am. It took a total of 3 hours from getting to the Surgery Center, filling out the library full of forms, getting Pre-opped, getting worked on and post opp. DW had to drive.

I look like a poor unsuccessful Pirate with a cut rate makeshift Eye Patch. It has to stay on for 24 hours. Then it comes off, and an eye guard goes back on when in bed. No pain...... yet. I think I can see the fluid they put in, but will know more tomorrow. No sloshing sounds, but I think I can make out a horizon where the fluid is.

So to cut a long story short.... ish. so far uneventful.

Soooooo....... Ahoy and Avast ye Mateys, this freebooter turned landlubber is feelin' OK. No carousing or partaking in the grog for a couple of days for me ay.

I would go in to any eye surgery carefully. As I mentioned in another thread some time back, my wife had IOL surgery due to cataracts. There was a problem, and she went back to have her right eye IOL replaced. She now has a BRVO (Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion) which is causing a black spot in the middle of her vision in that eye, which they have told her is likely permanent. Apparently once the retina loses blood flow from that "branch", it is not repairable.

Bad deal for her, and as I understand always a risk, and even more so with Vitrectomy.

They wanted me to schedule cataract surgery a week apart and I said no. The first one turned out fine and when I go for a recheck they try to get me to schedule the other eye. That is only 20-40 so I see no need to do it now. My Mom had her surgery go bad and never did the other eye. Even though the risk is small you just never know.

I have VERY bad eye floaters in my left eye along with a small kink in the membrane directly over my Retina right in my line of vision. Tomorrow I am going to a highly regarded retina specialist in our area. I will first have an exam (again), and I am sure he will recommend something. There are 2 ways of removal that I have read about, Laser & Vitreous Humor replacement. I may also have the membrane kink addressed (Peeled off).

As you can imagine I am very skeptical / nervous about this and am seeking some reassurance from folks with some experience or knowledge.

Mine eventually went away on their own. No treatment

Just when I finally decide to bite the bullet and schedule the cataract surgery the horror stories come out :nonono:

Cataract surgery is a breeze. No pain and wake up with better vision. Should have done it sooner.

Glad to hear so far so good ! Speedy recovery to you. Do you have to stay face down after the surgery ?

No as I had the saline versions as all I had were floaters and a Macular Peel. Considered very minor. The Gas bubble and oil bath are a lot more invasive and require more post operative care.

My eye patch (Arhhhhh!) comes off in a couple of hours I will give you another update then.

Currently no pain, I can see a fluid line that moves in my left eye, I am told that will naturally be replace over the next week.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Hope this goes well for you. I suspect it may take a while until your vision clears up. The procedure that scares me is getting my membrane peeled, as I've heard that may not result in a complete improvement (e.g., maybe 50% better), as it can strip off some retinal cells in the process.

Do not worry, I had Cataract surgery 5 years ago in both eyes. Not an issue at all. Feels like a little grit in your eye for about a day after is all.

Had my first post op checkup today. Doc says all looks good, air bubble is getting smaller and should be gone by Sunday. Have to go back in a week for second post op checkup. From my perspective, no pain at all using eye drops 4 times a day. Vision definitely clearer when I look above the bubble, but still not very usable because of the air bubble. I keep the patch on and use my other eye for the most part.

Don;t mean to bring out horror stories, and I will say my DW situation and result is apparently in the "outlier" area, but OTOH, I won't go so far as some others as to say: "don't worry about it, it's a breeze". That's what DW heard as well....

With the bubble, did they give you any special instructions about keeping your head erect, even when sleeping?

No not at all, it is a Saline replacement I had. You would have to with Oil or Gas as they are replaced with saline after the eye has healed, they are usually employed when there is retina damage, such as Retina Detachment Surgery.

The bubble I have (which is getting smaller BTW) is just air, as when they replace the original Vitreous, they do not "fill" the eye right to the brim. They like the eye to generate it's own fluid to replace the gap, which takes about a week.

The only instructions I have is not to bend over too often, not to lift anything heavier than 5 pounds and to wear and eye guard at night (To stop anything hitting the eye) for the first week.

I cannot drive for a week either. So Far so good. I must admit my vision is way better that it was as a lot more light is getting in now, it was very foggy before. It is still very disorienting though with the "bubble" bouncing around, so I wear an eye patch at home.

OK it is has been 1 week and 1 day after surgery, in general I would say things are good.... so far.

To clarify and recap.... I had cataract surgery 4 years ago in both eyes. Prior to THIS Vitrectomy surgery, it was like looking through tissue paper through the aforesaid left eye. BTW I did have mild symptoms before the Cataracts were replaced with IOLs. That and every straight vertical line I looked at had a sizable "D" (e.g.: Light Pole) in it from the Macular Pucker.

Today I still have the "Air/Gas Bubble" but it is very much smaller, and is getting smaller every day. It is a lot less noticeable and I do not need a "Pirate" patch anymore. Based on the amount of daily reduction, I would say it will be gone by Thursday or Friday this week.

I would say the clarity of my vision of my left eye has improved 100% and is as clear if not clearer as my other non operated eye.

Here are some concerns I have but the Doc does not seem to have.

1) Instead of having the "Opaque/Tissue Paper" sized floaters, I have a few Black specs and small hair type floaters, that honestly are not that bad in comparison. The doc seems to think that they will go away in time.

2) Where my retina was "Peeled" to remove the Scar tissue (Macular Pucker), right in the center of my vision is a very small blurred spot. This is not noticeable unless I concentrate on it.

3) My regular glasses I think will need updating on my left eye, as the focal length seems to have change a little. (Note: My Cataract Surgery was done for reading, I use glasses for long distance...... my choice as I have done so since I was 25). The Doc says NOT to do anything for at least 3 months until the eye fully repairs and settles. So it may get better.

I would give the results so far a 7 - 8 out of 10. Again 100% better than before, but not Perfect...... Yet.

I hope all the problems clear up. Glad it has been a success so far. I was not going to get my other cataract done until it was really b ad like the first eye but just realized that I have met my 3k deductible and if I have the other eye done before July it will only cost 400. So I will probably do it.

Thanks for the update. It sounds as though all is going according to schedule, which is good news.

Of course, today is the day to wear the eye patch out and about in the world - you might even score some candy!

Just curious.... Does the layer that was peeled away grow back?

I am glad you had such success. The idea of operating on the retina was unthinkable not that long ago. Today, they do it with a good amount of success. Amazing!

It was scar tissue, so I do not know. I have a follow up appointment tomorrow, so I will ask.

Is it actually scar tissue or a thin film that covers the macula part of one's retina, and is usually the caused by a PVD?
