Frugality Versus Cholesterol

I play jazz piano in a trio at an Italian restaurant every Wednesday, and I get paid $30 and get a dinner to go (this is considered a good gig around here). I can choose from most of the things on the menu, and I've had lasagna, pizza, calzone, cannelloni, gnocchi, eggplant parmesan, etc.

The portions are so large that we literally get four meals out of each one. Here's the calzone from last night (after spending a night in the fridge jammed into a small container, and with some removed for snacking):

Calzone 003.jpg

Also, the food is really, really good.

But this stuff is so unhealthy, I can't justify it to save a few bucks. The alternative is a salad that will be somewhat wimpy the next day.

Anybody got some good rationalizations?

Barter it to your wife for something you want? Even better, barter it to someone whose health is less of a concern to you that that of your own wife.

The other possibility would be to accept that not everything free is a good, and that unless you are starving there is not much to recommend this kind of "earnings".

Are there any other items on the menu that are reasonably healthy besides salad? Like vegetable lasagna? Or maybe you could get two salads instead of one.

Unhealthy, yes, if you eat very much of that stuff. Too many calories for me so I would normally split a meal like that with Frank.

But it looks like an Italian restaurant, and isn't a little olive oil good for your cholesterol?

Gosh, you can sure tell I live in New Orleans.

If you are worried that you might have a shorter lifespan if you eat this stuff, take Ernest Borgnine's advice..........

How about "You're gonna die eventually Al, wouldnt you regret missing out on a few tasty free meals?"

Arrange a Thursday poker game (or D&D, or whatever), and serve the leftovers to your friends. You'll have fun, get a rep as a good guy, and they'll be indebted to you, and will take you fishing on their boat (or whatever).

Other than that, I think you can rationalize eggplant parmesan as healthy.

Why not just get an appetizer ? Italian restaurants usually have antipasto or mussels .

What? No bacon?

Eating a calzone once or twice a week shouldn't be an issue. You have twenty other meals to eat twigs and berries...

Maybe they have meat dishes that you could extend in a more healthful way.. using a 1/2 or 1/4 portion in salads or extended with rice or cooked veg. at home. Maybe go for the protein and dose your own carbohydrates accordingly, is the idea... What about a cheese plate or cold cuts..(same idea)?

Forgot to add, just wash it down with some red wine for "nutritional balance"!

You can eat most any of that stuff if you split it into small portions, freeze them, then later pair a small portion up with a lot of veg.
It sounds like you're already kind of doing that. If you're still concerned, you can estimate the calories to determine portion size.
Unless they're using trans fats instead of olive oil, you're good to go, IMHO.

Scampi style shrimp drained and tossed with your own greens for lunch or dinner for two the day after?

Nice gig. Give it to a homeless person. Ask for $35.00 and no food.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to order a salad or a sandwich from now on.

However, check out this Chicken Wellington that I got from playing at a different restaurant last night. This is our lunch today!
