There have been a few news reports about generic drug recalls-some BP drugs and generic Zantac.

Those that are taking generic meds, please be aware and take this seriously. Our FDA has been given the task of reviewing generic drugs worldwide for many years. However, the foreign drug manufacturers in India and China have been committing major fraud, and our FDA has little authority overseas.

This is discussed in detail in a recent book:

Bottle of Lies, by Katherine Eban.

This issue was also discussed in a podcast interview of the author by Peter Attia.

The podcast can be found here:

It's a long podcast, but really enlightening, and at times entertaining. The story here is downright frightening and disgusting.

Feel free to investigate this and comment as you wish.

Sounds like something that could be sponsored by Big Pharma.... Oh! and do not forget those sub standard drugs we get cheaper from Canada..... But I may be wrong. :)

Further exacerbating the problem, Pharmacy Benefit Managers often throw up unrealistic hurdles to the branded drug.
I have twice encountered this with my two must-have drugs - A corticosteroid inhaler for seasonal asthma (which somehow never go off-patent) - they forced me to try a less effective cheaper alternative if I wanted coverage, and Celebrex where I was again forced to try 2 different over the counter NSAID's before they would cover.
Now I can get the generic Celecoxib with no problems.

I listened to that podcast awhile ago. Frightening. I follow K. Eban's advice and look up big pharma companies and their reputations and lawsuits pending.

I read about the Zantac but in that case the problem chemical contaminant was found both in the brand name drug and the generic equivalents. It's not just the generics in that case. I'm not sure about the others.
