Looks like you have to log in to access it - it's free if you are interested. I can't post the article as it is copyrighted.

The basic summary is they looked at a stroke-free population (999 subjects) over a 30 year time span. They measured ability/disability via various functional tests like pushing/lifting/mobility (walking, wheelchair use)/activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, dressing). They found that increases in systolic BP over time were associated with functional disability at follow-up.

This goes to show that even if someone doesn't have a stroke from high BP, they may still experience more rapid functional decline than someone with controlled BP.

Another reason for us all to make sure our BP is good and if not, get it controlled.

And conversely, those who'd had high BP but got it under control, had a much lower risk of functional decline in later years.

Thanks for the article link. Registering for Medscape was easy, and it looks like tons of good info there.
