If FIRE has a theme song...

I love music to begin with, and I thought this might be fun for others so inclined. Here's my candidate for "the" FIRE theme song. Enjoy...

There is no right answer of course, but what's yours?

How about "Zippadee-doo-dah?" Or maybe "Born Free?" I think both express what you feel when you are done, over and out.

My vote would be Louis Armstrong 's "What a wonderful World "

"Help!"

and de-program me from that all time top ten hit at the protestant church, "Work for the Night is Coming."

I liked the one Dory used to have on the board. Some gal he knows sings it.

It goes "Here are all the things I loved about my old job" and then ends.

Something like that, anyhow.

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun shiny day

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun shiny day

Look all around, there's nothin' but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun shiny day

I second that one.

"We've gotta get out of this place,
If its the last thing we ever do.

We've gotta get out of this place,
Girl, there's a better life for me and you."

Yep, that about how I felt before I pulled the plug.

I've been collecting the classic-rock quotes.

When I was incarcerated in college it was the old song "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends".

On active duty it was mostly the Eagle's "Hotel California" line "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave..."

Now it's an amazing number of lines from Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good To Me So Far".

But for true value in annoying your teenager's sense of parental dignity & responsibility, it's gotta be KISS with "I. Wanna rock and roll. All night. And party ev-er-y day." Preferably at a volume so loud that she covers her ears in pain, unbuckles her seatbelt, and tries to leap from the moving car.

Someone here posted this song by They Might be Giants (who also do the Daily Show theme):

starts about 28 seconds in - i like the distinction between work and what one chooses to do.

"Oh no, no, I never go to work
Oh no, no, I never go to work
Oh no, no, I never go to work
Oh no, no, I never go to work

On Mondays, I never go to work
On Tuesdays, I stay at home
On Wednesdays, I never feel inclined
Work is the last thing on my mind

On Thursdays, it's a holiday!
And Fridays I detest
Oh it's much too late on a Saturday
And Sunday is the day of rest

Oh yes, yes, practice trumpet everyday
Oh yes, yes, practice trumpet everyday
Oh yes, yes, practice trumpet everyday
Oh yes, yes, practice trumpet everyday

Practice Monday
Practice Tuesday
Practice Wednesday

Practice Thursday
And Friday
And I practiced all night on Saturday
So on Sundays I played best"

+1 on ' Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good To Me So Far". ' - the line 'I can't complain, but sometimes I still do' always makes me smile.

Man, I had to think about this, I sort of forgot about it - I remember that I just *had* to have an appropriate song to play in the car as I left work that last day. A single line from a Grateful Dead song just kept haunting me...

See here how everything led up to this day, from 'Black Peter'

and then the humility of the following lines:

And it's just like any other day that's ever been.
Sun going up and then the sun going down.

The song is about facing death - but, if you get philosophical about it, death is often thought of as a transition from one life to another, and that is exactly how I felt. Starting early with saving, investing and LBYM, the buyout, qualifying for health insurance, and being just plain lucky that something didn't come along and derail my plans, well 'everything led up to this day'. I just couldn't get it out of my head.

So that's it for me, 'Black Peter', from the Grateful Dead.

-ERD50

All of my friends come to see me last night,
I was laying in my bed and dying.
Annie Bonneau from St. Angel say the weather down there so fine.

Just then the wind came squalling through the dark,
But who can the weather command?
Just want to have a little peace to die,
And a friend or two I love at hand.

Fever roll up to a hundred and five.
Roll on up, gonna roll back down.
One more day I find myself alive,
Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground.

See here how everything led up to this day,
And it's just like any other day that's ever been.
Sun going up and then the sun going down.
Shine through my window and my friends they come around,
Come around, come around.

The people might know, but the people don't care,
That a man can be as poor as me.
Take a look at poor Peter, he's lying in pain,
Now let's come run and see, run and see,
Run and see, run, run and see, and see.

How does it feel to be
One of the beautiful people
Now that you know who you are
What do you want to be
And have you traveled very far
far as the eye can see

How does it feel to be
One of the beautiful people
How often have you been there
Often enough to know
What did you see when you were there
Nothing that doesn't show

Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man, too

You keep all your money in a big brown bag
inside a zoo, what a thing to do
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man, too

How does it feel to be
One of the beautiful people
Tuned to a natural E
happy to be that way
Now that you've found another key
What are you going to play

Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man, too
You keep all your money in a big brown bag
inside a zoo, what a thing to do
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man
Baby you're a rich man, too

Lennon/McCartney

How about "If I had $1,000,000 dollars" by the Barenaked Ladies?

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
I'd buy you a house
(I would buy you a house)
If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
I'd buy you furniture for your house
(Maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a K-Car
(A nice Reliant automobile)
If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love

If I had a million dollars
I'd build a tree fort in our yard
If I had million dollars
You could help, it wouldn't be that hard
If I had million dollars
Maybe we could put like a little tiny fridge in there somewhere
You know, we could just go up there and hang out
Like open the fridge and stuff
There would already be laid out foods for us
Like little pre-wrapped sausages and things

They have pre-wrapped sausages but they don't have pre-wrapped bacon
Well, can you blame 'em
Uh, yeah

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a fur coat
(But not a real fur coat that's cruel)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you an exotic pet
(Yep, like a llama or an emu)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you John Merrick's remains
(Ooh, all them crazy elephant bones)
And If I had a million dollars I'd buy your love

If I had a million dollars
We wouldn't have to walk to the store
If I had a million dollars
Now, we'd take a limousine 'cause it costs more
If I had a million dollars
We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner
But we would eat Kraft Dinner
Of course we would, we’d just eat more
And buy really expensive ketchups with it
That’s right, all the fanciest ke... dijon ketchups!
Mmmmmm, Mmmm-Hmmm

If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
And if I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I had a million dollars
(If I had a million dollars)
Well, I'd buy you a monkey
(Haven't you always wanted a monkey)

If I had a million dollars
I’d buy your love

If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars
If I had a million dollars, If I had a million dollars
If I had a million dollars
I'd be rich
