Insurance post Cobra question

I have Cobra coverage that expires April 30th with no conversion options. My wife has pre existing conditions (back problem and had breast cancer surgery in 2003). With the start of Obamacare in January, 2014, would I be better to go thru the entire process of applying for new traditional coverage through a guaranteed HIPPA plan or would I be OK purchasing a temporary plan that would carry me thru the end of 2013?
