I just realized that my health insurance probably won't cover us during our upcoming trip to South America. Before I throw $$$ at an unknown insurer, are there underwriters that I should look for... and others to avoid.

Here is a site to buy a variety of travel related insurance from a number of companies. The site provides a nice profile of the insurers, their products, and the companies ratings.

There are several companies. Regarding medical insurance... keep in mind pre-existing condition exclusions. If you are planning on several trips with in a year... many offer policies that cover multiple trips.
